Halloween Peppermint Patties

Ingredients

  1. 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, plus extra, as needed
  2. 1/4 cup pasteurized liquid egg white product
  3. 1 teaspoon water, plus extra, as needed
  4. 1/4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract
  5. Orange food coloring, as needed, optional
  6. 2 (4-ounce) bars 53 percent cocoa dark chocolate, chopped into 1/2-inch pieces (recommended: Nestle Chocolatier)
  7. 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, combine the powdered sugar, egg white product, 1 teaspoon water, peppermint extract and 1 to 2 drops of food coloring, if using. Mix on low speed until smooth. Increase the speed to high and beat until the mixture forms a stiff dough (if the mixture becomes too stiff, add extra water, 1/2 teaspoon at a time and beat until smooth). Put the mixture on a work surface dusted with powdered sugar and roll it into a log about 12-inches long and 1 1/4-inches in diameter. Slice the log into 1/4 to 1/2-inch pieces, form them into balls and flatten into discs. Arrange in single layers on the prepared baking sheets. Let the candies dry, uncovered, at room temperature for 3 hours.
  3. Put the chocolate and vegetable oil in a small bowl and set it over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until the chocolate is smooth and melted. Dip 1 half of each candy into the melted chocolate and return them to the parchment paper until the chocolate has set, about 3 hours.

I live in Iowa, generally humid here, and I have made these MULTIPLE times since October with RAVE reviews from friends and family. I started coloring the filling a light green for Christmas. I will say the batter is a bit finicky and until you do it a few times to get the hang of the right consistency it can be frustrating. I added a lot more powdered sugar the first time to get them dry enough. However the last time I left the batter a little wetter/stickier and just left them out to dry on the counter. I also dip the ENTIRE patty in the chocolate and then use a little drissel of white almond bark after the chocolate dries to dress them up. They are yummy frozen and I generally serve them that way. I’ll also say the only other negative is the batter generally gets my kitchen aid stand mixer off balance because it is so thick. But with a quick twist of a screw driver you can get it back in balance. Call Kitchen Aid directly to speak with the nice people for specific directions!

Well I only gave a 1 star as I haven’t made them yet. Seen in ” dry ” areas they come out fine, I live in Texas which is humid, so we’ll see. Also was wondering saw where someone made them orange and purple, I’d like mine red and green for X-mas so would it be ok to use white chocolate ? Has anyone tried that or would it ruin the taste ?

I do not own a standing mixer. So I beat it with a hand mixer for 5 minutes then gave up on getting it hard enough. So I used a spoon to drop globs onto a baking sheet. I tore a piece of wax paper and used it to press the globs down to get them a little flatter. I let it sit for several hours then turned them over and then let it sit overnight before doing the chocolate the next day. I used ghirardelli 60% dark chocolate because I like chocolate really dark. I used a smallish bowl for the chocolate so the chocolate would remain deep and I could dip the candies as far in as possible. They came out perfect! I kindof liked that they were shaped irregularly rather than perfect circles. So getting that hard consistency was not at all necessary. These were delicious and I have now made them several times!

Epic fail in my kitchen. Really humbling baking experience for me. I could not get it to make a hard dough for the life of me. I gave it 2 attempts and then gave up, mostly because I ran out of powdered sugar on the 2nd try. I threw it away. I’ve been making Giada’s recipes for years, and totally failed on this one. I am sure I was doing something wrong but after 2 tries I just gave up and made her pumpkin bacon cheesecake bites instead. 🙂 Oh well!

Perhaps experimenting and using peppermint schnapps or peppermint oil instead of peppermint extract could accentuate the flavor?

I love this recipe! I found it easy to do. I changed it up a bit to make it more For Christmas by adding green food coloring in place of the orange. I also added 1tbsp of coffee to chocolate and covered the whole patty. I find that the drying time varies.this will be one of my go-to holiday treats

Reading the reviews, I took into account the time to dry and it took more than 24 hours. But The flavor tasted like powder sugar and food coloring. I doubled the extract and I could barely taste the mint flavor. I was very disappointed they didn’t come out well. I’m undecided on trying again. 🙁
