Grilled Yams

  4.4 – 35 reviews  • Sweet Potatoes

This turkey nugget recipe was discovered by my mother some 20 years ago. Great discovery! This is a fantastic recipe to use up leftover chicken or turkey. Even salmon or tuna are OK. It’s extremely popular with my kids when served with leftover mashed potato cakes.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. olive oil-flavored cooking spray
  2. 1 large yam, peeled and cut into 1/2 inch thick slices
  3. salt to taste
  4. 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill to high heat and lightly oil the grate.
  2. Coat yam slices with cooking spray and season with salt.
  3. Arrange yam slices on the grate crosswise, so they don’t fall through. Cook until tender and glazed, 10 to 12 minutes per side. Serve with butter.

This recipe didn’t work that well, so next time I actually cooked the sweet potato in the microwave first, then cooked them on the grill — Devine

Very good but I used different spices. Oh and why peal them, I leave the pealing on……..

I saw these in the magazine and thought it would be a nice change of pace. It was good, but a very basic recipe. Next time I would spice it up, thanks for the idea!

300 the best way.

Brown sugar is the key to this recipe. You can definitely be heart healthy and cook per the recipe, but to achieve the best taste, add a little brown sugar and cinnamon. Great way to serve a different version of yams. Thank you Foxy!

Great yams! Perfect timing with kabobs with the low heat . Thanks so much!

First recipe that I’ve ever found that allowed me to ENJOY the yams!

10-12 minutes per side? Only if your fire is not hot. Pretty tasty, but as others have written, you better pay close attention or they will be burned.

I added potatoes, zuchinni, and some pepper and paprika. Great starting point though!

Need to try again. Be sure to watch added salt! It can completely ruin them.

These were amazing. I added brown sugar and grilled them in my George Foreman grill.

I took the other reviewers advice and pre-cooked these for a couple mins. in the microwave. I also added a little brown sugar to the oil olive to add some sweetness. All in all these were good… my husband loved them.

Yum! I did burn about half of them because I wasn’t paying close enough attention, so make sure you keep an eye on them! Super tasty. Thanks 🙂

I put my yams in the microwave for about 6 mins before putting them on the grill. I put them into a tin (throw-away) roaster pan. They did burn a little, but I liked the burnt pieces best.

It’s pretty hard to mess up yams. Serve with some butter – delish!

These were so good! Served with a honey butter! Delicious! Thank you!

I followed the recipe exactly and these were very good – and a nice change from mashed yams. I agree with another reviewer that the high heat is a little much – the yams charred VERY quickly and we had to move them to a higher level on the grill. Maybe medium-high heat? Great recipe!

Loved them! I too put the sweet potatoes in the microwave for just 4 minutes to start the cooking process, then put them on the grill. Brushed with butter, then added a little Splenda brown sugar on top at the end to carmelize. Yum!!
