Grilled Portobello Mushrooms

  4.5 – 344 reviews

When I was growing up, this dish was a tradition at the Thanksgiving table. Over all else, this was the thing I most anticipated. You may make a 9×13-inch baking dish by doubling the recipe.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Additional Time: 1 hr
Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Servings: 3

Ingredients

  1. 3 large portobello mushrooms
  2. ¼ cup canola oil
  3. ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
  4. 3 tablespoons chopped onion
  5. 4 cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

  1. Clean mushrooms; remove stems, reserving them for another use. Place mushroom caps gill-side up in a shallow dish.
  2. Combine oil, balsamic vinegar, onion, and garlic in a small bowl. Pour mixture evenly over mushroom caps; let marinate at room temperature for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat; grease the grate.
  4. Grill over the hot grill until caramelized and tender, about 5 minutes per side; serve warm.
  5. The nutrition data for this recipe includes information for the full amount of the marinade ingredients. Depending on marinating time, ingredients, cooking method, etc., the actual amount of the marinade consumed will vary.

The balsamic overpowered everything else. You cannot grill on both sides as directed because the veggies fall off. Some have found this recipe attractive, but I think wasted my nice portobellos.

I ‘liked’ it; however, the Balsamic Vinegar was too strong for me. I did use it as a marinade for steaks and thought it was VERY GOOD!!. 🙂

This was delicious! Per the accompanying video I did not flip them on the grill.

Excellent. I laid a few basil leaves and red lettuce leaf on the portobellos after the marinade.

OMG This is so good. I removed both stems and gills. I also reduced the recipe to 2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar (not the cheap stuff) and only used one large garlic clove. I ate all 3 caps and hope I wasn’t really eating 651 calories…but this was dinner! I will make it again for sure.

Too much vinegar as some mentioned. I followed the recipe as described and it does not taste well.

It was great…I also added some mozzarella cheese (shredded) on top…it was knock out…with or without the cheese.

Lost this reciepe when they did an update and couldnt log in. Finally was able to log in and all my favorites were GONE! I finally found the reciepe again and added to my favorites. Hopefully it wont get lost again. THIS IS A REGULAR MEAL I SERVE.

Excellent ,I topped it off with parmigiana!

Great flavours. It lost 1 star for me because I don’t think the grilling method cooked the onions and garlic enough before the mushrooms were cooked. I finished it off in the toaster oven and then it was perfect.

This was awesome. We didn’t know if the times would work but we took them off the grill after 12 minutes and were delighted at the results. It went great with Sauvignon blanc wine and grilled shrimp.

Nice change of pace over a regular hamburger.. the only thing I did different was drizzle a Balsamic Glaze over it when I went to eat it.

This was a big hit. We did flip it and grill it on both sides. The flavor really added to the portobello.
