Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 heads Belgian endive, halved lengthwise
- 1 large head radicchio, cut into 6 to 8 wedges
- 1 head romaine lettuce, quartered
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
Instructions
- Prepare the barbecue (medium-high heat).
- Drizzle 1 tablespoon of oil over the endive, radicchio and romaine, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill the lettuces until they are crisp-tender and browned in spots, turning occasionally, about 6 minutes. Coarsely chop the lettuces, then toss them in a large bowl with the remaining oil and vinegar. Season the salad, to taste, with more salt and pepper. Serve warm.

Added endive & thick sliced onion to the grill and chopped it all up. very good!
I found this recipe a couple years ago and love it every time it’s made. I definitely recommend using a veggie tray on the grill (I don’t know the real name of it but the kind with the holes). The radicchio is a little bitter for my taste but I think red cabbage is a great alternative!
Hubby did not like this recipe .
I absolutely love this recipe, I make it all summer and crave it all winter!
My lettuce never got crisp..just soggy. I tried to revive the flavor with some herbed goat cheese, which at least made it edible, but the salad texture was just not good and the radicchio was too bitter, there were not competing flavors to compensate for it. Won’t make again.
I was not to keen on the idea of grilled lettuce, but after having this…I am sold hook, line and sinker.
This is a nice change for lettuce. The grilling gives the romaine a hearty and sweet flavor which is unique and delicious.
After making this salad once, the whole family requests every chance they get. Everyone loved it and it was so easy!
one of my favorite summer salads…a wonderful alternative to green salads. even bettr after a few hours when the balsamic vinegar really sweetens the lettuce!
Grilling the lettuce gives the salad a real depth of flavor that makes it out of this world!
