Grilled Asparagus Spears

Prep: 10 min
Cook: 5 min
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed and peeled (see Cook’s Note)
  2. 4 tablespoons olive oil
  3. 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat a grill.
  2. Place asparagus on a plate. Drizzle oil over the asparagus and turn spears until they are coated. Sprinkle with salt and turn again.
  3. Grill asparagus for 5 minutes over a hot grill. Each minute or so, roll each spear 1/4 turn. Asparagus should begin to brown in spots (indicating that the natural sugars are caramelizing) but should it not be allowed to char. Dripping oil may cause flare-ups. Keep a glass, or spray bottle of water handy to spritz on coals, if necessary.
  4. Remove from grill and serve immediately (eating spears with your fingers enhances the experience).

This was great! I did use bamboo skewers to hold them together and sprinkled a BBQ rub on them for a KC flair!

We use Kosher salt instead. I think it tastes better.

My grandson will eat untill he can’t eat anymore when we fix this recipe. Instead of salt we use cajon spice. Fantastic!

The grill gave the asparagus great flavor and made the tips of it almost crispy, which I liked. The party loved it, but I would make more for a large group of people. I served it with paula deans lemon dill sauce that was the perfect pairing for summer!!

this is the way I normally make asparagus. another great way is to take 2 spears wrap them with 1/2 a strip of bacon, then grill them. Takes it to another level.

I have never had asparagus on the grill before so my daughter and I decided to try it after we put together our new charcoal grill. Asparagus is one of my vegetable favorites.

She used sesame oil instead or regular oil and sea salt instead of regular salt.

I WAS SHOCKED – the spears got brown and toasty and SWEET – this was a huge surprise because I have grilled veggies for decades and never had a veggie with the result of asparagus.

This recipe is not the star – it’s grilling asparagus that is the true star here!!!
