Grandmother’s Matrimonial Squares

  4.8 – 5 reviews  • Canadian Cookie Recipes

Since my grandma has been unable to make this dish herself for some time, I have taken over the family tradition of making this delicious treat. Wishing you the same pleasure that we do.

Prep Time: 20 mins
Cook Time: 40 mins
Total Time: 1 hr
Servings: 24
Yield: 24 bars

Ingredients

  1. 1 ½ cups quick-cooking oats
  2. 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  3. 1 ¼ cups brown sugar
  4. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  5. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  6. ¾ cup butter
  7. ½ pound dates, pitted and chopped
  8. ¾ cup water
  9. 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Stir oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and baking powder together in a bowl; cut in butter using a pastry blender until mixture is mealy and butter pieces are uniformly small.
  3. Press half of oat mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  4. Cook dates with water in a small saucepan over medium heat until they fall apart and are easily mashed with a wooden spoon, about 10 minutes; remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Spoon date mixture evenly over oat mixture in baking pan; sprinkle remaining oat mixture evenly over top and press into place.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven until crust is golden at the edges, about 30 minutes; remove to cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

Easy, and so tasty!

I think I may have cooked my dates a bit too long, because they ended up pretty thick and a little hard to spread over the crust, but that’s easily remedied. These bars are delicious. The crust is really buttery, the date filling is just sweet enough, they’re extremely tender, and they actually taste more indulgent than they really are.

So good, just the way my mother made them when we were kids!

Delicious. I used only 3/4 cup of brown sugar. Still turned out to be plenty sweet. Definitely saving this recipe.
