I felt it needed some pizzazz so I did a double batch using equal beef/chorizo, Hatch chilies, smoked paprika, a shot of Tabasco, stewed tomatoes in place of soup. All I can say is between four people it was almost all gone and everyone said to keep the recipe.
Totally awesome. Big hit with my Mother-in-law. Thank you for sharing your Recipe!!! Great flavor. Quick and easy to put together.
I broke my cardinal rule on 1st time making a recipe. I never change a recipe until I have made it at least once but not this one. I had everything but the slaw, I had a head of cabbage and used it instead of the slaw I cut it up into bite size pieces. I needed it sooner than hour and fifteen minutes so I used a pkg of Knorrs Spanish Rice. I also added 4 pieces of raw bacon cut into small pieces. Everything else was as per recipe. Instead of layering I mixed it all up. The casserole was done in less than an hour. Really good. My Grandmother was Polish and it tasted like her stuffed cabbages. Will definitely make this again
Read all reviews and decided on, one bag slaw, rotel tomatoes w/chipotle, can fire roasted tomatoes, 3 cups red pepper tomato soup from Costco, 1/2 large onion, one rounded teas. Montreal seasoning, can cream mushroom soup. In Instantpot, Sautéed rice in butter, added onion till soft, added Montreal and chopped up rotisserie chicken, mixed around, added other ingredients plus can can of water. Mixed and cooked on Stew cycle for 35 min. The red pepper soup took it over the top. Yummy
This is truly delicious. So easy to make which is an extra bonus. Definitely will be using this recipe again!
Used Mids tomato basil pasta sauce instead of tomato soup. Otherwise, followed the recipe exactly. Loved it.
I baked this for 1 hr and 20 min and the rice was cooked perfectly. No need to cook ahead. That’s just an extra step, making this simple dish, not simple anymore. I added garlic powder and Lawrys season salt to the meat while browning. I added one can of diced tomatoes also. I thought it was so, so. Hubby liked it. If I make this again, I’ll add more coleslaw, there wasn’t enough cabbage flavor.
Cabbage rolls (sarma) is part of my heritage, so I’m always looking for easy facsimile recipes, lol. This was pretty good as is. However, I’ve used the template and made a number of variations. For example, I tend to use ground chicken or turkey (either plain or sausage flavored) and switch up the soups (cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, etc), brown rice instead of white, and it’s always good. The whole ‘canned soup casserole’ thing reminds me of my childhood but seriously – this tastes really good.
I thought it was rather bland. My husband didn’t really like it. I don’t think I’d try it again. Maybe it would be better with tomato sauce and diced tomatoes and some garlic.
The only change I made was to add garlic to the meat mixture and would also add salt and pepper next time.
Loved it. Easy to make and taste was good. I cook for elderly people so I did boil the cabbage for about 10 min to make sure it was soft before everything was layered.
This hotdish was even better reheated as a leftover! I used tomato bisque soup and brown basmati rice. Delicious!
After reading the reviews I did what another reviewer did and substituted italian sausage for the beef. Italian seasonings, diced tomatoes and two cans of tomato sauce. Instead of uncooked rice I used leftover rice from Panda Express. Took microplane and grated fresh parm onto the top. Casserole came out great. I think next time I will use a pound and a half of sausage to give it a meatier texture.
Good but needs a little spicing up.
I made this in Instapot (35minutes on stew setting) instead of layering and baking it. I also used brown rice and leftover spaghetti sauce instead of the white rice tomato soup. It tastes pretty good. Texture is good with the brown rice.
Didn’t use condensed tomato soup. I used a can of diced tomatoes with onion and peppers. Turned out great. Use your imagination and take the basic recipe asa guide.
We love this recipe and it’s a staple during colder weather. We do add extra spices for more flavour. This time we used one can of cream of bacon soup, one tomato soup and ground chicken instead of beef. It’s wonderful.
It was delicious
Easy recipe, but no flavor. I give it 2 stars because it is a good base to something better. More seasoning is needed.
I am Slovak, so we make our cabbage rolls (Holubky) a little bit differently. I used this recipe as a base for the one I grew up making. So, I cannot give an apples-to-apples comparison. I will say this: I still prefer the cabbage rolls, but this is quick and easy
I like to use head cabbage and I like lots of cabbage …and I like to use canned tomatoes when I have them
