Glazed Ham

To create a memorable supper with minimal actual labor required, a raw ham is slow-roasted and then seasoned with a sweet smoky sauce during the final hour of cooking.

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 8 hrs 35 mins
Total Time: 8 hrs 40 mins
Servings: 12
Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (8 pound) bone-in shank ham
  2. 4 cups water, or as needed
  3. ½ cup honey
  4. ½ cup brown sugar
  5. 2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
  6. 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  7. 1 pinch ground cloves

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). Place ham in a roasting pan. Pour in water to a 2 inch depth. Cover with a tight fitting lid.
  2. Bake for 6 to 8 hours in the preheated oven (all day or all night). Remove from the oven, pour off drippings and reserve. Debone ham, removing any excess fat as well, and return to the roasting pan.
  3. Skim fat from the top of the drippings, and discard. In a small bowl, mix one cup of the drippings with honey, brown sugar, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce and cloves. Pour this over the ham, cover and return to the oven. Remaining drippings may be discarded or reserved for other uses.
  4. Bake for another 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

I made this per the recipe and feel it is an awesome simple recipe. I have smoked, slow cooked and tried dozens of bake options. This one is great, before i serve the ham i slice and let the juices soak for a while. My family and friend always ask how i prepared the ham and don’t believe it is that simple. I do not change the recipe.

Banked in a cast iron Dutch oven all day (8 hours) came out perfect! So tender the bone I literally just gently pulled it out. Do delicious it doesn’t even need a glaze. Wow! For the glaze I used only 1tsp smoke so as not to over power the meat and substituted the Worcestershire with 1/2 apple cider vinegar and 1/2 soy as I had none on hand. Definitely a staple recipe! Thank you for sharing!

So tender is was close to pulled pork than ham. So I cooked a second ham a few weeks later and basted it in the last hour like bbq. INCREDIBLE!

Came out awesome. Everyone loved it. My son said add a bit of mustard like Dijon, so I did. I pierced it with a dozen cloves and just put the pineapple on for decoration even though it’s not in the recipe. I don’t eat it myself. Excellent and will definitely make again. My son is an executive chef and when he saw the pic because he’s in Tn, all he said was WOW.

Followed recipes exactly except used agave nectar rather than honey. Best tasting glaze and super tender. This is my new go to for baked ham.

I used the glaze on a precooked ham, reducing the Worcestershire sauce and liquid smoke by half, because I thought it seemed like a bit too much salt for us. Very good. I will make it again.

We loved it! The juices/glaze was excellent. I had a 11lb ham (fully cooked-non spiral) . I cooked at 300 for 4hrs and then poured on glaze and cooked another 1hr @ 300. This time we just had small bowls of the glaze next to our plate and dipped out ham in it. Sooo good! Next time I want to figure out how not to have the glaze so thln though. The only thing I would change.

Super easy recipe to make! I made this for our Christmas Day dinner and it was a hit. I had a smaller ham, so adjusted the cooking time and it turned out perfectly!

Very good flavor.

So delicious and so easy. We used it on a boneless ham because we were only cooking for 2 1/2 people. Had a friend come over who doesn’t normally eat ham and he even said it was delish.

Turned out wonderful. I did add some (probably about a half of a jar) cherry juice from a jar of cherries and cooked it all in the crockpot! Yum! Everyone loved it.
