Yield: | 1 margarita |
Ingredients
- 1 lime, juiced
- ½ lemon, juiced
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 2 (1.5 fluid ounce) jiggers reposado tequila (such as Jose Cuervo® Gold)
- 1 cup ice cubes, or as needed
- salt as needed
- 1 teaspoon brandy-based orange liqueur (such as Grand Marnier®), or to taste
Instructions
- Squeeze lime juice and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker; top with sugar. Pour tequila over sugar mixture and add ice. Cover shaker and shake. Allow shaker to rest for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Spread salt onto a plate. Rub the lemon around the rim of the margarita glass and dip the rim into the salt to coat. Pour margarita into glass and top with a brandy-based orange liqueur.
- Use two heaping tablespoons white sugar. The most common mistake is people don’t use enough white sugar because they think it’s too much. The drink will be tart.
- Don’t worry most of the sugar stays in the shaker. Let the drink rest after shaking. That little bit of water from the ice melting helps with balance.
Reviews
This is the best margarita I’ve ever had. At first I was horrified by the sugar but it doesn’t all go in the margarita, it’s just the right amount when shaken. I’m loving the double shot of reposado tequila! These go down so smooth! Mr. Gerry himself has a line of cocktail products so I bought his spicy cocktail salt. Add some jalapenos and Bloody Gerry Gourmet Habanero Sea Salt for the best spicy margarita!
Wonderful margarita!! One of the best I’ve made!! Love that you use all fresh ingredients and can leave out the store bought margarita mix. It’s my go to margarita recipe from now on. Thanks!!
Simple, and delicious! The perfect afternoon refresher. Thanks, Gerry!
Excellent recipe! At the end I like to pour the mixture over crushed ice. You can also try running the crushed ice through a food processor to make slushy ice – this is trickier to get right but with practice you can get the right balance of mix and ice.
. Great recipe! Only advice is to find a way to incorporate simple syrup because the sugar doesn’t dissolve well.
Perfect!
I’ve been hunting for a good margarita recipe and this is it. I like be that it uses fresh ingredients. Everyone I’ve made this for has loved it!
I made it exactly as the recipe said and loved it. I will use this again.
OK, I’m giving two stars for the ingredients EXCEPT for the tequila choice. Jose Cuervo Gold?? Really? Invest in something just a tiny bit more expensive and get 100% agave tequila. Jose Cuervo Gold is NOT top shelf tequila.
Fantastic margarita! I was initially put off by the amount of sugar but you don’t pour all of it. It’s perfectly balanced so that the right amount gets poured and the excess gets left at the bottom of the shaker. Sweet and Sour makes me sick so this was the perfect recipe. This is absolutely delicious. The perfect margarita holds up to its name. Change nothing, follow the recipe, and enjoy!
This recipe is amazing!! So simple and fresh and delicious! I didn’t have any orange liquor, so I had to leave that out. Didn’t miss it at all!
I love a good margarita and this is the best I have ever made. Used recipe just as written. Perfection!
Perfect cocktail for our Cinco de Mayo dinner! Made exactly as written with a little less tequila . Nothing but fresh ingredients. So much better than the mix in a bottle!
I followed this recipe exactly and it may be the BEST margarita I have ever had! And I have had a lot of margaritas… So good!
Loved this AFTER my change of 3 oz tequila toned down to 2 oz. Everything else I followed exactly as described. I too have been looking for the right balance of tart and smooth and am especially glad to get away from the store mix. This is my keeper margarita recipe for sure!
I’ve had my share of margaritas but this is my favorite.
Excellent drink! Just follow the recipe exactly, and you won’t be sorry! Thanks, BloodyGerry!
