Ingredients
- 6 cups canola oil
- 4 green tomatoes, medium size
- 3 cups all-purpose flour (1 1/2 cups of flour reserved for the cornmeal breading mix)
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup cornmeal
- 1 tablespoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon celery salt
- 1/2 tablespoon cayenne pepper
- 1 tablespoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Pinch paprika
- 4 ounces goat cheese
- 2 cups The Flying Biscuit Cashew Relish, recipe follows
- 1/3 cup fresh cilantro
- 2 large red jalapenos
- 1 1/2 cups cashews
- 3/4 cup honey
- 1/3 cup white vinegar
Instructions
- While preparing the dipping process for the tomatoes, heat oil in large pot until the oil reaches 350 degrees F. You will need a slotted spoon to drop the tomatoes into the hot oil. De-core and cut the ends off green tomatoes. Cut tomatoes 1/2-inch thick and set aside in medium bowl.
- In small bowl, set aside 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour. In medium bowl, mix milk and eggs to create an egg wash. In large bowl, combine remaining flour, cornmeal and salt. Add celery salt, cayenne, pepper, onion powder, and paprika. This is the cornmeal breading mixture for the tomatoes.
- Line a sheet pan with parchment paper to place the breaded tomatoes on after final dredging. Begin the dipping process by dredging the tomatoes in the all-purpose flour, then the egg wash, and finally through the cornmeal breading mixture. Repeat this process until all the tomatoes are breaded. Once the oil has reached 350 degrees F, begin frying until golden brown. Tomatoes will float to the top when finished cooking. Drain on paper towels. Garnish with cashew relish and finish with a dollop of goat cheese.
- Clean and pick cilantro leaves off stems. Cut stems off jalapenos and roughly chop. Combine cashews, chopped jalapenos and cilantro in food processor and pulse until combined. Do not puree, it should be a rustic mix. Pour mixture into bowl, and add honey and vinegar and mix thoroughly.

These were outstanding.
I love these! They can get a little pricey with the goat cheese and the cashews and all but it’s totally worth it. This is my favorite way to enjoy fried green tomatoes.
Never made fried green tomatoes before. These were very crispy and tasty. Will make again!
Love the flying biscuit, and this recipe did not disappoint!!! Although the proportions for the wash and cornmeal mix is rather large for only 4 green tomatoes. I would recommend halving the milk/egg wash… In addition, probably don’t need 1.5cups of floor to dredge the tomatoes in before the wash…. again, you will be wasting a lot of flour. As far as the fried green tomatoes themselves, they turned out amazing, I will definitely use this recipe again. I skipped the cashew relish and used ranch dressing, so can’t speak for that part of the recipe. Overall, it hit the spot!
I have not made these yet, but I couldn’t believe that the recipe was here on the Food Network. I have had these at the Flying Biscuit Cafe in North Carolina and asked the waiter for the recipe. He basically told us what was in it, but no amounts of each ingredient. These were soooooooooo good. The relish was delish also. I won’t use quite as much Jalapeno pepper in it when I make it, it was a little spicy for my taste. Can’t wait to make these and I hope they come out as good when I make at home.
Depending on your childhood and family’s kitchen…… Good flavor and texture. Try this and share with others that you know had eaten this food as a child. Bottom line…we have another recipe and it depends on US to determine if we will ever eat it again. Yes!
These are some of the best fried green tomatoes I’ve ever had. A great combination with the goat cheese and the relish. Good at the restaurant but even better when you make it at home and can tweak it to your personal tastes.
The first time that I had this recipe for friend green tomatoes was at the Flying Biscut in Atlanta. The tomatoes, relish, and goat cheese were delicious. I have made this for family and friends and everyone love it!!!
I love this recipe. It’s so good and actually easy to do.
I was always looking for a recipe for green tomatoes and it stopped here! The topping is great and a wonderful combination with the goat cheese. My family has asked me to make it again this summer and are out searching for green tomatoes for me.
