Ingredients

  1. 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  2. 2 Vidalia onions, sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rings
  3. 2 large shallots, sliced into 1/8-inch-thick rings
  4. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 2 cups sour cream
  6. 1 cup mayonnaise
  7. 1 teaspoon celery salt
  8. 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  9. Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
  10. Chives, finely chopped, for garnish
  11. Potato chips, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large saute pan, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Add the onions and saute, stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown and caramelized. Add the shallots and saute for 8 to 10 more minutes, until the onions and shallots are dark brown. Add the garlic and saute for 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for 5 minutes, then chop the onion mixture into 1/4-inch pieces. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  2. In a bowl, mix the sour cream, mayonnaise, celery salt, Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Fold in the onion mixture. Refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight. Garnish with chives and serve with potato chips.

This is my go-to recipe for parties & family get togethers. Everyone loves it and it’s super easy to make. It’s way better than the soup mix.
Stacy Melendez
I know fresh ingredients are better for me but I am going back to the Lipton onion soup package for my dip. This was time consuming to prep the onions and came out sweet.

This dip sucks! Truly. Buy it from a can or make Ina Gartens. This is the illegitimate baby of the two. Just gross.
Michael Gross
It’s simply perfect!
Kimberly Klein
Terrific! Better the next day. I used yellow onions and it was still plenty sweet.
Carlos Johnson
I personally don’t like the sweet onion. I think I’ll try again with white onion.
Lori Murillo
I made it exactly as written and though it was very good, it was too sweet for my taste. If I make it again, I will use yellow or white onions. Texture of this dip is perfect.

This is by far the best homemade French onion dip recipe I have come across!!

This was a complete hit!!! Absolutely great! I used finely diced leeks as well. Also, I added the Worcestershire sauce directly to the onion mixture as it was almost done caramelizing. Adding it to the cooking onions deepened their color and sweetness. This recipe will remain in my “go to” list of “crowd pleasing” recipes.

I make this dip often! I don’t even need to look at the recipe or directions. I do not add whorchestershire, didn’t care for that flavor combo. Added garlic powder – a lot. This gives the dip that added punch that is desperately needs. Also I increase the sour cream and use less mayo. It’s a very forgiving recipe. It’s best made a day ahead or at least 4 hours ahead.
