Ingredients

  1. 3/4 cup mayonnaise
  2. 8 to 10 basil leaves, finely chopped
  3. 6 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
  4. 1/2 cup drained and chopped sun-dried tomatoes (oil-packed)
  5. 2 pounds ground sirloin
  6. 2 medium eggs, slightly beaten
  7. 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce (recommended: Tabasco Pepper Sauce)
  8. 2 tablespoons dried Italian seasoning, crushed
  9. 1 teaspoon salt
  10. 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  11. 3 garlic cloves, minced
  12. 1/2 cup dried Italian bread crumbs
  13. 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan
  14. Vegetable oil, for brushing grill rack
  15. 12 sandwich-size focaccia bread squares, about 1/2-inch thick
  16. 6 thin slices prosciutto
  17. 6 romaine lettuce leaves
  18. 6 large paper-thin red onion slices, separated into rings

Instructions

  1. In a grill with a cover, prepare a medium-hot fire for direct-heat cooking.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and basil. Set aside. In another small bowl, combine the feta cheese and tomatoes. Divide into 6 equal portions, forming balls. Set aside. In a large bowl, combine the ground sirloin, eggs, pepper sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic, bread crumbs, and Parmesan. With hands or a large spoon, gently bring all ingredients together; do not overmix. Form meat mixture into 12 patties. On 6 of the patties, gently place the feta and tomato mixture onto patties, pressing down lightly. Place remaining patties on top, press, and seal edges to totally enclose filling, forming 6 total patties.
  3. When the fire is ready, brush the grill rack with vegetable oil. Place patties on grill, cover, and cook for 4 minutes, until bottom is brown. With spatula, turn over patties and cook an additional 4 minutes, or until done to your preference. During the last few minutes of grilling, place focaccia, cut side down, on outer edges of grill to lightly toast.
  4. Spread generous portions of basil mayonnaise on cut sides of bread. Place patties on bottom pieces of bread, then top with a slice of prosciutto, a lettuce leaf, and red onion rings. Top with remaining bread and serve.

Easy to make and amazing results. Goes great with a nice belgian/german beer.

Remaining romaine, tomatoes, & feta makes a nice side salad. You won’t need the usual fries/rings, these little meatloafs are very rich.

The prep time is rather ambitious.

This one was good and worth trying. So far the best hamburger recipe I’ve found here blends sauteed onions into the raw ground beef.

I never believe it when people say “best ever” but this really is the best burger I’ve ever tasted!

This burger is not for the faint of heart. It’s a meal in itself! Make sure you don’t put too much filling in or your burgers will be SUPER tall and take a long time to cook. There is a reason this was a winner at the Food Network Cookoff. Delicious!

This is one of the most fantastic burgers I have ever had. Absolutely delicious! Even with soy “beef”. However, I did tweak the method a little, to cut down on the extra labor. After combining the mayo and basil, I put every remaining ingredient into the same large bowl, so there was feta and SDT throughout each burger. I also fried them up in a pan, since soy burgers don’t do too well on the grill. Would recommend this recipe to all my friends and family. Or keep it to myself, so they think I’m a genius when I entertain.

8 thumbs up!

A friend and I made this and it was delicious. We didn’t want to fire up the grill so we made it on a George Foreman grill and it was still great, but I’m sure it’ll be even better on the grill.

I can never make just regular hamburgers again. It was almost like a juicy meatloaf sandwhich but with a surprise of the feta and sun dried tomatoes in the middle. My family loved it! Will definately make these burgers again!
