This quick and simple steak recipe is a family favorite. This is a recipe that everyone can create, from the experienced home cook to the newlyweds starting out and expanding their culinary library. I’ll be delivering this to the future wife of my son at her bridal shower soon!

Ingredients
- cooking spray
- 1 ¼ pounds extra-lean ground beef
- ½ cup finely chopped sweet onion
- ⅓ cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
- 1 (14 ounce) can beef broth, divided
- 3 tablespoons milk
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- ¼ cup flour, or as needed
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 2 (10.75 ounce) cans cream of mushroom soup
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 small sweet onion, or to taste, sliced thin
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Prepare a large casserole dish with cooking spray.
- Lightly mix ground beef, 1/2 cup onion, bread crumbs, 3 tablespoons beef broth, milk, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper together in a bowl; divide into 5 portions and shape into patties.
- Season flour with salt and pepper in a wide, shallow dish. Gently lay patties into the flour to lightly coat.
- Heat vegetable oil in a 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. Fry patties in hot oil until browned completely, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Remove patties to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess grease.
- Stir remaining beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper together in a bowl until smooth.
- Arrange drained patties into the prepared casserole dish. Spread onion slices atop the patties and pour the soup mixture over the patties to cover completely.
- Bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink in the center, 45 minutes to 1 hour. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 160 degrees F (70 degrees C).
- This can also be made in a slow cooker instead of in the oven by moving the browned patties to a slow cooker, adding other ingredients from there, and cooking on Low for 4 to 5 hours.
- This is delicious served with mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or rice.
- It could easily be made with ground turkey for a lower calorie alternative.
- I use all msg-free products and Healthy Request brand soup, and nobody knows the difference.
- I leave extra seasoning to my guests so some might not find this salty enough.

I followed the recipe instructions and did use the crockpot method to allow the flavors to meld. We were not disappointed. Delicious!
This was delicious. I followed the recipe exactly except I omitted the flour step and sauted mushrooms and the onions first before browning the ground beef patties and only used one can of soup. Great comfort food and turned out very good… served with mashed potaties. Just as good the next day!
I made this according to the slow cooker method. I made 6 patties out of the 1 1/2 pounds of beef so I could get 2 meals for the 3 of us. It was plenty. I put in a ton of fresh mushrooms. I as short on sweet onion so used yellow in the hamburger mix and saved the sweet for the rings. The first night we had it over rice and the second over baked potatoes. Yum both nights!
The flavors were okay but there was nothing to thicken the liquid into a gravy like the photo shows. If I make it again I’ll use less beef broth as well as actually making a roux with flour and the beef broth and then add the soup.
This is good for homemade salisbury steak. I omit salt when using cream of anything soup – even though I use the healthy choice – lower sodium and fat free. There’s still a lot of sodium in the soups, if you’re sensitive to salt. There’s salt in beef broth unless you’re using no sodium or homemade, this all adds up to a-lot of salt. .. save salting until sitting at the table. To a couple Allrecipe Members comments below: You do not make the soup when a can of condensed soup is called for, use the contents of the can UNLESS stated otherwise. To another Allrecipe Member – I have two sons and a daughter – my daughter has numerous recipes of mine that she asked for years ago. One of my son’s is married and his wife asked for some recipes that they both love, so maybe the recipe gift at the shower is going to be better received than you anticipated.
It sounded good until I saw that it required 2 cans of cream of mushroom soup. I substituted home made cream of chicken instead and loved it. I don’t do cream of anything soup. Too much sodium and not enough flavor. Also used home made beef broth. A little horseradish sauce in the burgers and worcestshire sauce add wonders.
This resulted in a quick easy tender Salisbury steak. Its a bit salty so next time I would leave out any added salt. I also used only 10 oz of beef bone broth and one can of cream of mushroom soup and there was plenty of gravy. I also added some minced onion in addition to the chopped fresh onion. Next time we will use the healthy request cream of mushroom soup too to cut down on the salt. Thank you for this great recipe.
This was delicious. I adjusted the amount to make eight patties. Be aware, it took about an hour and fifteen minutes to prep for the oven. I intended to add the Worcestershire, garlic powder and mushrooms to the recipe, and only remembered the mushrooms, which were, of course, a great nutritional addition. The only change I made was to use golden mushroom soup, rather than cream of mushroom, since the golden does not have soy in it.
Made it wihout the flour (didn’t need it) added garlic salt, onion powder, little bell pepper, worchestshire to taste. turned out excellent! A really big hit. Served over buttered noodles. YUM
Absolutely delicious. The batch I made this week is almost gone, and I’m seriously considering making it again tomorrow. Thank you for my new favorite recipe!
Hubs said it’s a keeper! I did cut down on the salt a bit, since with all the soup and broth I was afraid it would be too salty. Otherwise, made as written.
Delicious & the closest to what I remember from childhood. Have made as written & in slow cooker. No changes, but I do use low sodium ingredients & add fresh mushrooms to the sauce.
I made it!! Left out the onions just because I didn’t have any on hand. Used crushed crackers to sub for the bread crumbs. Added Lipton soup mix and Italian seasoning for the flavor. Absolutely loved this dish 100%!! This recipe has officially been requested on the menu once a week! Thank you so much for the recipe!
This was tasty, but it took a lot of dishes! I would definitely add garlic and onion powders, along with Lipton onion and mushroom soup. I would add mushrooms as well. Will probably make again. Family seemed to enjoy it.
Can I sub almond flour for bread crumbs and flour for keto I believe I can have everything else since I do one meal a day and intermittent fasting 20/4 daily thanks and BTW cream for the milk
Best Salisbury Steak recipe I’ve ever made. My husband also loved it. It was so good, we had it with fried eggs for breakfast the next day!!
This was the best I have ever had! Juicy, tender and so much flavour!! Will definitely be using this recipe again. Perfect for that comfort food dinner with mashed potatoes and a side salad!
Excellent flavors! Exactly what I was looking for. The only thing I’ll change in the future is to use another cut of meat instead of stewed meat. I would prefer the meat to be a little more tender.
I had thawed out ground beef for burritos but didn’t realize my husband had eaten the tortillas. I used it to make this recipe with stuff I already had on hand. I’m so glad I did. Husband gave it a 10/10 and it was super easy. We had it with buttered egg noodles. Thank you!
I followed exactly as the recipe called for and it was delicious. I will definitely keep this as a go to dinner idea.
This was amazing! The entire family loved it! Even my husband, who hates mushrooms, thought this was delicious. The only change I made was to increase the recipe for 8 serving and add ½ tsp. of garlic powder to the ground beef mixture. I will definitely be putting this in a regular rotation for our family meals.
