Easy Vanilla Cake

My family adores this. It just requires one dish to prepare, making it very simple. Chicken or smoked sausage can be used in place of the pork chops.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr
Additional Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 20 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 1 9-inch cake

Ingredients

  1. cooking spray
  2. 2 ⅔ cups all-purpose flour, or more as needed
  3. 1 cup white sugar
  4. 1 tablespoon baking powder
  5. 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  6. 2 pinches salt
  7. 3 eggs
  8. ¾ cup milk
  9. ¾ cup vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch cake tin with cooking spray and line with parchment paper.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla extract, and salt together in a large bowl. Add eggs, milk, and vegetable oil; mix by hand or beat with an electric mixer on low speed until smooth. Add more flour if batter is too runny. Pour into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, about 1 hour. Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes. Run a table knife around the edges to loosen. Invert cake carefully onto a cooling rack. Let cool completely.
  4. You can substitute water for milk if preferred.

My cake turned out perfect. Instead of non stick spray I buttered the sides, and cut a parchment piece to fit the bottom only and then buttered that to stick to the bottom , this will give a brown crisp look around the cake border. I then made a buttercream for the inside , and cut the the cake in half to spread it then re-assembled it with buttercream on top as well. I made 3 versions of buttercream one with blueberry, banana, and plain. Here’s the recipe for the buttercream Ingredients 3 cups powdered sugar 1/3 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1 to 2 tablespoons milk

I used this for my mother’s birthday.

This cake wasn’t the worst but it wasn’t good either. I bake cakes a lot as a hobby and this cake didn’t really make the cut. It was way to dense and it didn’t have enough flavor. The cake batter was so thick so please for the love of God, if you make this cake make sure to add more milk/water. I split the cake it two and added 1/4 cup of milk extra to one side and that was so much better. I recommend adding about 2/4 more cup of milk/water so it turns out more cake like.

Simple easy recipe and also easy to follow and add as you wish

It took 30 minutes to bake

Batter was pretty dense and it was done cooking within 30 minutes so it’s not necessary to wait the full 1 hour if you check it and the knife comes out clean. Batter tasted pretty good though

I added extra liquid because the batter was very thick. The cake turned out extremely dense. It was ok but not great. I won’t make it again.

I loves it I just added cinnamon and used French vanilla coffee creamer and cooked it in my crockpot.

1 star means you couldn’t eat it, which I quite literally could not. I followed the instructions exactly, it was boiling like pure sugar in my oven at one hour. I have no clue how this happened.

This was my 1st baking experience. The cake turned extremely dense and dry, and the batter was like cookie dough, in a way. To be honest, the cake was okay, but i think it needs more improvements.

Followed it and it was the consistency of cookie dough. Tasted like cookie dough too..

OMG THE CAKE BATTER TASTE DELICIOUS

It definitely isn’t my favorite cake. The flavor is on the bland side but for me I don’t mind that if you’re using icing as that’s very sweet. My biggest issue is that it’s very dense. Like others have said, less flour or more liquid would have helped a lot. I’m a pretty novice baker so I followed to a t but will go with my gut in the future, the batter felt a little too thick.

10/10! I made it just like the recipe said, it came out so easily! I don’t know why other people are having trouble but im gonna guess they made it wrong. But I recommend this very much! It’s good with or without icing.

I really liked it i added chocolate chips.( they make everything better am i right?) and it turned out well did burn my arm on the oven

it was so good this is how it turned out 5 stars

If you are just now reading the reviews like I did about the proportions of the batter just after you made it just like I did, don’t worry! What I did to help the cake bake better is to bake for 30 minutes then flip the cake and then bake for another 30 minutes repeat(Parchment paper is your friend here). When a utensil stuck in the middle of the cake is clean it’s cooked(If it’s not you can get sick because of the 3 raw eggs). At the 15 minute mark for both sides turn the baking dish if your oven bakes uneven like mine. After letting it cool if you want extra sweetness, you can make a sort of icing of equal parts brown and granulated sugar (or just double of each if you don’t have one or the other), cinnamon (This is optional!), Some maple syrup(for constituency and sweetness ), butter, and some salt. Mix well so the salt is even in your icing , and that should help with a lack of sweetness at least a bit. Sorry this was long but don’t panic! the cake should be fine if you do this, I didn’t have to pre-heat my oven either.

In defence of the humble vanilla cake: I usually don’t post reviews on recipes, but I gotta say, this cake is exactly what I needed. Now obviously most of you are more prolific bakers. As was proven by the fact that I unsuccessfully baked not one, but two different cakes this evening. I had attempted to make a cake that uses primarily whipped egg to rise and instead made sweet omelettes twice. This lead me to out of desperation stumble on this recipe. Does it have a good flour to liquid ratio? I don’t know. Will it taste good? Who’s to say? But will I be able to give this to my boyfriend on his birthday? Thankfully, yes I will. Thank you so much cake recipe maker for creating a cake that even I can do. Wish me luck on frosting!

I followed the recipe exactly and honestly the texture was awful, it had the texture of cornbread. The flavor was not very sweet. It did not taste like cake.
Anthony Banks
i feel like this recipe is PERFECT. It tastes very good and bluey.

Unfortunately I can’t go below a 1 star, THIS IS NOT A CAKE. Found this recipe and decided to make it for my son’s birthday, the embarrassment started when he cut the bread, dough, certainly not cake, and continued when I had to serve it. Please delete this recipe from the website…
