Easy Puffed Wheat Squares

  3.8 – 19 reviews

This puffed wheat square recipe has existed longer than I have. One of those dishes that you can’t go wrong with. Sometimes I press the cereal mixture into muffin cups instead of cutting it into squares so that they are the ideal size for school lunches. In our home, they never last very long.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 5 mins
Total Time: 15 mins
Servings: 24
Yield: 24 squares

Ingredients

  1. 8 cups puffed wheat cereal
  2. ⅓ cup unsalted butter
  3. 1 cup packed brown sugar
  4. ½ cup corn syrup
  5. 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  6. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Pour cereal into a large bowl.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir in brown sugar, corn syrup, cocoa powder, and vanilla; cook until mixture begins to bubble, 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Remove from the heat and pour over cereal. Stir until cereal is fully coated and transfer to a 9×13-inch casserole dish. Press with a greased spatula to flatten and cut into 24 squares. Alternatively, press mixture into two 12-cup muffin tins.

I’ve made about 50 batches of puffed wheat in the last 7 years My mother inhales it like a vacuum cleans the floor She loves it This recipe on the other hand did not hit the mark I believe it asks for too much puffed wheat. It isn’t a dark product in the end and tastes more like a sugar crisp cereal. I’ve never had an account before. I signed up just to make a review. That’s saying something. I looked into it afterwards. This recipe calls for more puffed wheat than good recipes, this calls for less cocoa, and less butter than the good recipes. Steer clear of this one. See photo

I thought it was great. I wouldn’t make any changes, but on the other hand I had had better.

I used 7 cups of puffed wheat instead of 8 cups and doubled the amount of the sauce/mixture! Turned out pretty good.

Turned out perfectly. Just sticky enough. Only change I’d recommend is to double or triple the cocoa

Really easy and quick, highly recommend for gatherings, birthdays, And holidays.

I agree is dry and I made more syrup than recipe called for. If like sticky would cut back to 6 cups puffed wheat. I also got adventurous & added 1 tbsp course Kosher salt! Chocolate & salt…….Delicious taste sensation!!

I made a few changes based on reading the reviews saying that the squares turned out too hard. I used golden syrup instead of corn syrup, I added an extra tablespoon of butter, and I only used about 7 cups of puffed wheat. They were a little gooey when room temperature but they were perfect when refrigerated.

I am only going to say use 6 cups of puffed wheat way to dry

I’m disappointed in this recipe. First time I tried it I thought I had cooked it too long as it was rock hard. Tried it a second time and i just barely brought it to a boil. Still too hard and far too dry!

One of my favourites. Always a trick to boil the mixture for just the right amount of time so it doesn’t go rock hard. I booked it for two minutes without stirring and it came out beautifully. Thanks so much!

It was good, but I cooked it less than recommended so it wasn’t rock-hard. A good treat to whip up for a play date!

Good, but they are a little dry.

Perfect recipe to take to anywhere

Very yummy and easy for kids to make. Definitely reduce boiling time to 2-3 minutes if you like them chewy, and not too hard. I also added an extra tbsp of cocoa.

This is the classic, in order to keep the wonderful chewy texture after storage you really MUST use real butter and keep the boil time to around a minute. I never have a storage issue since this stuff disappears rather quickly in my house! Thanks for sharing this 🙂

If you find it hardens too much reduce the time you boil the syrup. The syrup acts like candy syrup. The longer it boils the hotter it gets and the harder it is when it cools down.

sooo good, I didn’t find it too chewy or hard as another reviewer commented but that can also depend on how long you cook your mixture…as soon as it starts to bubble, you are good to go.

This is a true classic and it is the one I grew up with and loved as a child (and still do). Having read the earlier review that complains about the overnight hardening despite being wrapped I was unsure but be assured while it does harden it is delicious and the chewiness of the hardened result is the desired result of this classic recipe. Thanks Alberta Gurl for posting it.

Taste delicious fresh but hardened quite a bit overnight despite being wrapped. Would consider increasing the mix or maybe adding a few marshmallows next time.
