One of my favorite green bean side dishes is this. It has long been a part of my family. With potatoes and pot roast, it is excellent. It resembles green bean relish almost exactly. Not your typical green bean preparation! Even excellent when leftover. For some crunch, I’ve also included water chestnuts that have been rinsed and drained.

Ingredients
- 4 cups dry red wine
- 2 (2 inch) pieces cinnamon sticks
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon whole allspice berries
- 1 large strip of lemon peel
- 1 large strip of orange peel
- 2 tablespoons sugar, or more to taste
Instructions
- Combine red wine, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, lemon peel, and orange peel in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Heat gently, but don’t boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you’d like to add more.
- Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavors infuse the wine. Serve your mulled wine hot in glasses or mugs.
- When peeling off the lemon and orange rinds, make sure to avoid the pith.

My husband and I both really enjoyed this wine! The only addition I made was to add a single star anise alongside the other spices, but didn’t change anything else. I found the sweetness level to be spot on as written. Absolutely delicious! Thank you for the recipe!
