  4.5 – 440 reviews  • Sugar Cookie Recipes

My family adores this recipe for sugar cookies. Frosting that has dried out offers a unique touch.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 8 mins
Total Time: 18 mins
Servings: 36
Yield: 3 dozen

Ingredients

  1. ¾ cup butter flavored shortening
  2. 1 cup white sugar
  3. 2 eggs
  4. 1 tablespoon milk
  5. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  6. 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  7. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  8. 1 teaspoon salt
  9. 1 tablespoon butter
  10. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  11. 2 ½ cups confectioners’ sugar
  12. 3 tablespoons milk
  13. 2 drops any color food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and white sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt; stir into the creamed mixture. Cover dough, and chill for at least one hour.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Lightly grease cookie sheets, or line with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch in thickness. Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 1/2 inches apart onto cookie sheets.
  3. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove cookies from baking sheets to cool on wire racks. Cool completely before frosting.
  4. In a small bowl, beat the butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla and confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Mix in the milk one tablespoon at a time until a good spreading consistency is reached. Stir in food coloring to desired shade. Decorate cooled cookies, and set on waxed paper to harden.

Excellent cookie recipe. I didn’t have any trouble rolling it out after letting it sit in the fridge for about 2 hours. Cookies baked perfectly in 8 minutes.

Great recipe! I will definitely make this again in the future. I substituted regular flour for gluten free flour and I had great results. The cookies weren’t too dry and the icing was delicious. Plus, I cut them into fun duck shapes! Super cute!

These turned out great! Followed the recipe for both the cookie and the frosting. Tasted great and were easy to work with. Only challenge was rolling and cutting them out but I got the hang of it and ended up with about 19 cookies.

This was a fabulous recipe for both the cookie and icing! I only baked the cookies for 5 minutes and they were the perfect texture- soft and moist. The icing hardened quickly and nicely. Everyone loved them! Thank you!

Was sticky at first but after I chilled the dough and added some flour to roll with it was good to go. Rolled nicely and the kids loved them.

A bit greasy with the shortening. Held the shapes well

The cookies turned out perfect, nice and soft and tasted great. The frosting, however, was a bit too sweet. We’ll have to find a healthier and less sweet alternative, if one exists. Overall, pretty good though!

These cookies are very yummy. Everyone loved them! The frosting recipe is just the right amount too. I’ve tried other frosted sugar recipes & this one’s a keeper.

Wonderful recipe, but 400 degrees was a bit high. I burned the cookies on the lower rack. Others were fine.

My go to recipe. Everyone requests it when I make a lot of cookies

Made as directed and they were delicious even without icing.

I have been making this recipe for a few years and it is fabulous. Recently had to go gluten-free so tried it with King Arthur Measure to Measure flour. The resulting cookies were as good as with wheat flour. So happy to be able to continue to use this recipe as sugar cookies are a family tradition.

Nice recipe but I used royal icing and here they are! The kids had a great time decorating!

Very tasty cookies, I added a splash of milk to thin the frosting as the kids were breaking the cookies. It turned out very great though! Just a handful of flour when rolling the dough out kept the dough from sticking too much
