Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 3 teaspoons vanilla sugar
- 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, or to taste
- 6 large apples – peeled, cored, and sliced
- 3 ½ tablespoons water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a large baking dish with butter.
- Mix brown sugar, vanilla sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl.

- Layer about 1/3 of the apples in the prepared baking dish; sprinkle with 1/3 of the sugar mixture.

I’m not the best cook, but I am very happy with how this turned out! I had 8 medium-sized gala apples that needed to be used up, and they worked perfectly for this dish! I did read the comments before starting, so I followed the advice of some of the other commenters. I used about a 1/4 cup of applesauce and added just enough water to it to make it thinner. I added this instead of the water at the 30-minute mark. I then pulled it out 10 minutes later, stirred it, and added a crumble topping. I put it back in the oven for another 10 minutes until the crumble topping began to brown a little on top. It was supposed to be a dessert for after dinner, but the aroma filled our house and lured the whole family out to the kitchen. Guess I’ll have to make another batch!
I could have used more apples, but they were very good. I will try them on ice cream.
Alrighty then Baker-Bees and Chef-Aronis! Here’s my 2¢… Definitely pleasanly pleased! Wasn’t quite sure with the twists I made! First of all, had just three apples although in an 8×8 Pyrex it made 3 perfect layers. I may do a pear mix in the future. Nextly… I made the approximate same amount of dry topping and glad I did as I don’t see how that would have been enough for 6 apples. I would recommend double for 6 apples. Then lacking vanilla suga-duga I substituted 2 tsp of white sugar and driziled a little vanilla ext on each layer as well as lemon juice. I was concerned the nutmeg and cinnamon would be too much although recommended amount was fine. Lastly, after 30 minutes in oven it did seem a bit dry and was concerned 3 12 tbl of water would be to little! As per other comments I thought apple juice would be more advantagous than water but alas I did not have that handy so…Lightbulb! I did have apple sauce and mixed that with water 3 to 1, little over 14 cup. Poured that over the top and mixed it all up! Then covered with foil for another 15 minutes. When I pulled it out it was a bubbling masterpiece! How bout that! Served over vanilla ice cream, whipped topping would also be good! One more idea, I think on top of a waffle would be scrumptious! DELICIOUS! Nothing really fancy, but easy enough to make. I added a little more butter just because I like butter… Next time, I’m going to crumble some graham crackers on top just for some crunch.
This recipe did not turn out well for me. I used some Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples. The whole thing was just over spiced and came out dry and mealy. I was so hoping it was going to turn out well but it did not. Oh well. I’ll look for another baked apple recipe.
Looks & tastes great, smells fantastic! Made almost as recipe stated. Used 6 medium-sized Cooking apples (am in UK so they are a thing here). Slightly less cinnamon as Mum not keen on strong cinnamon taste. I’d make it with recommended amount for myself. I adjusted the cooking time & temp as using Halogen Oven – similar to using Fan oven. 160C for 25mins, then put recommended amount of water in & cooked for further 12 mins. Apples very tender and not dry at all. Not anywhere close. Was excellent, especially with good vanilla ice cream. Have made a couple of times, definitely a keeper!
It definitely needed more water or some type of liquid but the spots that weren’t dried out were really tasty.
Apple pie, baked apples ECT have never really been a favorite of mine but i had an abundance of red apples that i needed to use up so i gave this a try. Because i was preparing my apples prior to baking, i soaked them in lemon water until ready to assemble my dish. I followed the recipe except i added about a fourth cup of water mixed with a fourth cup of caramel ice cream topping. I buttered an aluminum pan and put in my apples, mixed them up with the dry mix then poured my water caramel mix in and mixed that up. I covered with foil and put it on my grill on low. Stirring occasionally to make sure the bottom wasnt burning. They came out great. Served with some vanilla bean ice cream while they were still warm. I grilled because i happen to already be grilling but this would be great in the oven too.
This dish got raving reviews from friends. I headed the advice of those who had written reviews before me, and added more liquid than it called for. I didn’t have any vanilla sugar, so I added 1 cup of apple juice (instead of water) with a teaspoon of vanilla.
I used 2 Tbls melted butter, 1/8 c brown sugar 2Tbls coconut sugar, pinch of salt and 1/4 tsp vanilla along with 1/8 tsp nutmeg and 1tsp cinnamon. I mixed this well and coated the bottom of a large cast iron skillet. Covered the sugar mixture with old fashioned oats then layered the prepared apples around the top. Cooked for 15 minutes stirred it all up and cooked it 10 more minutes. My house smelled Devine. I served the apples with cinnamon puffs for breakfast. Very yummy.
I added walnuts and oatmeal
I used unmeasured amounts of dark brown sugar, regular sugar, and cinnamon. I didn’t have vanilla sugar and didn’t substitute with vanilla extract. So basically I just followed the time and temperature directions and used the recipe as a general guide. I only used one large honey crisp apple and it turned out delicious!
Used vanilla extract instead of vanilla sugar. Not sure the difference, but it was delicious nevertheless.
I did a little tweeking to the recipe and turned out great! I doubled the powder ingredients added 2 tsp. of cornstarch and added 1C water
No changes, first time, Delicious. I will be baking more than often.
I added Apple juice for liquid because they were drying out. I didn’t have vanilla sugar so I used light brown. It wasn’t necessary, it was sweet enough.
This was delicious, and easy to make! Just make sure you only add 3 TEAspoons of cinnamon! The first time I made it, I used 3 TABLEspoons! Waaay too much cinnamon! I don’t have vanilla sugar, so I used 3 teaspoons of granulated sugar, plus about 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. My family likes the vanilla flavor, but you could add less, depending on your family’s tastes. I have also made this with only 2 teaspoons of regular sugar and an extra teaspoon of brown sugar. We like it both ways!
such a delightful desert… not to mention the aroma that fills the house is reminiscent of long ago times and chiili nights spent around the fireplace with the ones you love. it’s funny how scents can make your mind travel. I, like many others, didnt have the vanilla sugar but I made my own out of powdered sugar and vanilla extract and a 200oven. of course it’s simple enough to just substitute extract for sugar. I think next tim I’ll go a little less on the cinnamon
I omitted the vanilla and make in individual ramekins adding puffed pastry on top. Delicious!
Simple. She’ll make it again. 10 yr old wouldn’t let me in the kitchen. We learned what vanilla sugar is. We stirred the water in with the spices before pouring over the apples, because we didn’t have 45 min. for it to bake. We doubled it but not the water. With the water already mixed in, we didn’t need extra liquid. It also only took 30 min in the oven this way.
