I was given the recipe for bread and butter pickles. I’ve been preparing these with cucumbers my father raises in his garden for at least 20 years. I struggle to follow the instructions when I deliver them to family and friends. These bread and butter pickles are the greatest I’ve ever discovered, so the recipe is the real star here.

Ingredients
- 2 quarts water
- ½ cup salt
- 20 cucumbers, cut into 1/8-inch slices
- ice cubes
- 6 cups white sugar
- 4 cups water
- 4 cups apple cider vinegar
- 4 teaspoons ground turmeric
- 4 teaspoons mustard seed
- 1 teaspoon celery seed
Instructions
- Stir 2 quarts of water and salt in a large pot until salt dissolves. Submerge cucumbers in water. Add ice to water to keep cold. Let cucumbers soak for 2 hours.
- Drain salt water; rinse and drain cucumber slices twice.
- Stir sugar, 4 cups water, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, mustard seed, and celery seed together in a large pot; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; add cucumber slices. Simmer until cucumbers are completely hot, but do not bring to a boil, about 10 minutes.
- Sterilize canning jars and lids in boiling water for at least 5 minutes. Pack cucumbers into hot, sterilized jars, filling the jars to within 1/4 inch of the top. Run a knife or a thin spatula around the insides of the jars after they have been filled to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims of the jars with a moist paper towel to remove any food residue. Top with lids, and screw-on rings.
- Let cucumbers pickle for 2 weeks before eating, shaking each jar once daily.
- These pickles don’t need to be refrigerated until you open a jar.
- The nutrition data for this recipe includes the full amount of salt water. The actual amount of salt consumed will vary.
Reviews
I’ve been making these since 2016 and my family loves them. My recipe was getting so worn that I needed to reprint it and was thrilled when it was still available. I make them exactly as the recipe shows except that I water bath can them. These are fantastic!
These are really good pickles!!! The ice bath was a game changer. They are not overly sweet and are crunchy.
Ran out of time when I started, so the cucumbers had been soaking in the fridge for the better part of 6 days, but the one I tasted before canning them was absolutely delicious! Giving 5 stars and hoping I remember to come back with an update in 2 weeks.
Best pickles ever
This is my 2nd year of making these pickles and everyone loves them. I had small pickling cukes so only got 5 pint jars. I had alot of brine left over so I looked on line and sounds like it is not safe to use over again. Does anyone have any opinions on this?? Thanks Lynette
These are so good and easy! I have made them numerous times and everyone loves them. I need a similar recipe for dill pickles.
Follow the recipe exactly they are better than the best store-bought?
Great recipe. Absolute delicious! 2nd year I’ve made these. Easy to make. Has anyone tried this with a lower amount of sugar? Six cups seems an awful lot for 5 pints
Delicious bread and butter pickles. Easy recipe, and beautiful…couldn’t wait to try them. We left them on the kitchen island and every day my sons asked when we could try them. Used garden cucumbers so the skins are very tender
I made it and they didnt come out good at all
I was looking for something similar to Mrs. Wages pickles, and I don’t think this is quite it. The color of my liquid is very yellowish – not like your pic at all, so maybe I did something wrong. The taste is good, though.
I’ve made these two years running and about to make them again!! The whole family brings me empty jars wanting more!! It’s easy and delicious!!!!
Thumbs up. Only bread butter recipe i use .
Everyone loved it. Great recipe. I add extra garlic and hot peppers to make little zesty. and sliced onions.
Very good made them
These are excellent pickles. Nice, simple and easy to make. They are a hit every time I share them at get-togethers.
Do you need to process these if you want to keep them in storage. Does anybody know? Could somebody please tell me what I should do? Thank you
This is my second summer of making Deb’s Bread and Butter Pickles and My family and extended family loves them.
These pickles are fantastic and easy to make! They are a huge hit with family and friends. Thanks for the awesome recipe!
This is my go to recipe. I make them for family and friends and sell them too! I also make the same recipe and chop to make relish.
Great recipe. I’ve been canning cucumbers all summer with neighbors’ garden cucumbers (my cukes didn’t make it this year). None are left. They got eaten by my family and neighbors as soon as they were ready. Today I’m making my final batch of the year. I also made several jars of cucumbers mixed with peppers, garlic and onion. They get eaten quickly too. Today’s batch includes sliced green tomatoes, cukes, garlic, and peppers. I already know they’re going to be great. One thing I do though that’s not in the recipe is put them in a water bath for 10 minutes at the end to be safe. Great recipe, and easy too!
