Dark Chocolate Hot Cocoa

  4.8 – 11 reviews

This dish is great for the slow cooker. Cook after combining ingredients. Delicious! This vegetable-filled lentil stew will keep you warm during the winter and all year long. It is spiced with cumin and coriander and flavored with tomato paste. It goes well with a loaf of homemade rustic bread. Vegan and vegetarian diets. Serve with some bread on the side for dipping.

Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup whole milk
  2. 1 ½ teaspoons brown sugar, or to taste
  3. 2 ounces dark chocolate (such as Moser Roth® 85% Dark Chocolate), or to taste
  4. 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream, or more to taste
  5. 1 pinch ground cinnamon, or more to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat milk in a saucepan over medium heat until just before boiling, 3 to 4 minutes. Add brown sugar and stir until dissolved, about 1 minute. Stir dark chocolate into milk until melted, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and stir cream and cinnamon into milk mixture.
  2. For creamier cocoa, use more heavy cream. I also like to put whipped cream at the bottom of the mug and pour the cocoa over it.

Yum! I happened to have some 85% chocolate so this recipe was perfect. I didn’t have heavy cream so used whipped topping instead. Left out the cinnamon just because I wanted to try the taste of the dark chocolate without it.

It was too thick to drink. I plan to try it again with 1oz of dark chocolate.

Perfect. Added a tablespoon of flour for that Haitian touch.

Very awesome! Made one exactly as written (but using 1%-thats what we drink) it was super tasty and rich. The second mug I again used 1% with a teaspoon of honey instead of brown sugar. They were both great.

Rich rich rich. I melted my chocolate in a double boiler. Actually it was a glass bowl over a pan of boiling water. I warmed my milk in a pan with sugar & cinnamon on other burner. Then added it to melted chocolate gradually whisking it in. I never added cream…I had it out but was so impressed with its thickness and richness I never added any cream, I used fat boy milk alias whole milk! That probably made the difference! Numnum Nummy!

Where has this recipe been all my life? I would give this 10 stars if I could. The taste is rich and creamy and tastes like all the good things in life in a mug. I used coconut cream and heavy coconut cream instead of dairy versions. I used whipped coconut cream too. Top this with some cayenne pepper! This will make you hate those cold dreary days a bit less! Thank you Aurora for this heavenly cup of chocolate goodness!
