If the coleslaw has a great, creamy dressing, it’s one of my all-time favorite dishes. I developed this coleslaw dressing after doing some research, experimenting with dozens of various recipes, and attempting to obtain the flavor that I enjoy. People frequently ask me for this recipe. What astonished me was when a chef requested for my dish at a potluck. Since leaving the southern region of the United States, he said it was among the nicest things he had ever tasted.

Ingredients
- ⅔ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup buttermilk
- ⅓ cup white sugar
- 3 tablespoons low-fat milk
- 1 lemon, juiced
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 ½ tablespoons white wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon garlic and herb seasoning blend (such as Mrs. Dash®)
- ½ teaspoon celery seed, crushed
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Whisk mayonnaise, buttermilk, sugar, milk, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar, garlic and herb seasoning blend, celery seed, salt, and black pepper together in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to use.
- Combine 8 cups finely chopped cabbage, 1/4 cup shredded carrot, 1/4 cup thinly sliced red radish, and 2 whole green onions or 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced, in a large bowl. Stir in dressing until evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
- We like to let the coleslaw sit overnight; it becomes even creamier and better-tasting.
Reviews
Had to do a few adjustments due to no buttermilk on hand, used apple cider vinegar instead of white wine vinegar and celery salt instead of see but let it sit overnight and the slaw was amazing! This will now be my go to recipe!
I liked it a lot! Haven’t tested it on husband yet, but I’m sure he’ll like it. I didn’t have buttermilk, so I used a substitution and mixed vinegar with heavy cream. Used a little less sugar, which was too sweet for me, so added some apple cider vinegar. People said it was too thin, so I omitted the milk and added a little extra mayo. Hubs like blk pepper and garlic so used more of those. Loved the Mrs. Dash!
Coleslaw is my favorite side dish. I found a store that made great coleslaw but it was 45 minutes away so I decided to try to make it myself. I could never get it to come out creamy enough until I found this recipe. My only change is that I would put less sugar. Otherwise I found it to be absolutely delicious. You can judge for yourself!
This is exactly what I was looking for!! I wrote down the recipe tonight and making this over the weekend. Sometimes I add diced pineapple to it to rev it up a bit. Thank you so much.
Best I’ve ever had. I used heavy cream instead of buttermilk and I omitted the milk. I didn’t have fresh lemon so I used the bottle lemon juice. So delicious, I will be making again this weekend.
The dressing is delicious, but I agree with others, that it was too runny. I omitted all of the low fat milk and it still was loose. Also, I thought it was a little too sweet, so I increased the vinegar to 2 tbsp. I will definitely use again! Thanks!
It was absolutely wonderful. Could have been a little creamier but that was not the worst. We gobbled up the whole coleslaw mix and dressing with our hot dogs
Very flavourful. Good recipe. I halved the ingredients for two adults and we have left over dressing we ate looking forward to eating.
I didn’t have white wine vinegar so I used 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 balsamic vinegar. Turned our great and my husband loved it!
I had to make a change to this because I don’t like sweet dressings. I removed the sugar but followed everything else to a “T”. She is right. This is truly the best recipe I have tried. I LOVE the buttermilk addition! I am neither from the South or in the South but I love many of their recipes for the simple flavors. DELISH!
Very good. I will use this recipe from now on.it does turn out quite thin . Use less liquid if you want a thicker dressing, which is what I will do next time.
Exceptional taste for just a few ingredients! I didn’t have a whole lemon, so I juiced the half I had and then minced about a tablespoon of rind and tossed into the salad. Otherwise, made it according to the recipe. Delicious!
Loved it . I have to change the milk products due to allergies. I make Buttermilk with cashew milk. It is perfect
I made this exactly as written except, based on some reviews about it being too thin, I left out the low-fat milk. It is Delicious! The tanginess is perfect and blended beautifully with my broccoli slaw with dried cranberries and slivered almonds. My family loved it, too, and said it was better than any store-bought dressing. Thank you for this Great recipe!
Love it!
Creamy and just the right amount of sweetness. I made half the recipe for half of a 12 oz bag of shredded cabbage, carrots and red cabbage mix. In place of the buttermilk, I just added about a tsp of red wine vinegar to 1/4 cup measure and filled the rest with non-dairy creamer. In place of the herb seasoning, I just added some garlic and onion powders. Very good recipe!
This is a delicious coleslaw dressing! I made it to use on one bag of coleslaw that I bought ready-made at the grocery. I only needed half of the recipe for the whole bag, as I don’t like to “drown” the coleslaw in dressing. Just the right amount of sweetness for our taste, and even my husband – who is not a great fan of coleslaw – liked it very much.
very good didn’t change a thing
This dressing is exactly what we were looking for. Creamy and delicious – not too tart, not too sweet. I didn’t actually measure the ingredients, but this turned out exceptional. I used whole milk instead of lowfat milk because dairy fat is actually not your enemy and I probably didn’t put a full 1/3 c of sugar but it was close. That said, this recipe is great and I highly recommend it. My people, whom are notoriously critical of all food, loved it.
I have made this several times, my whole family loves it. Great recipe!
I mixed this up in the morning so the flavors had all day to meld. I was a little worried as the dressing is very thin. I mixed it with the slaw and gave it a few hours to blend. The taste is very good, and it made a nice cole slaw, but there was a lot of liquid in the bottom of the bowl. Would have liked it a tad better had the dressing been thicker. Served it with ‘Jan’s Loaded Pizza Fries’ from AR and we enjoyed a nice dinner. Thanks rlt11_NMC, for sharing your recipe.
