Classic Manhattan Cocktail

Ingredients

  1. Ice
  2. 2 parts whiskey
  3. 1 part sweet vermouth
  4. 1 to 2 dashes bitters, such as Angostura
  5. Orange peel
  6. Real Maraschino Cherries, recipe follows
  7. 1 cup maraschino liqueur
  8. 1 pint sour cherries, stemmed and pitted (in a pinch, you can buy a jar of sour cherries in light syrup, and drain the syrup)

Instructions

  1. Place ice in a cocktail shaker. Add the whiskey, vermouth and bitters. Rub the orange peel around the rim of the cocktail glass. Strain the drink into the glass. Add 1 to 2 Real Maraschino Cherries and enjoy!
  2. Bring the liqueur to a simmer, and then turn off the heat. Add the cherries, stir, let cool, and then pour into jars. Refrigerate. Cherries will be tasty for months.

Rye, yes – and orange bitters if no peel is available. Also a bit higher whisky to vermouth ratio. Please don’t let this be shaken, and the sooner you pour, the better.

I use rye whiskey , knob creek, with ice or stone cubes with bing cherries. Traditionalists probably disagree, but it’s the way I like it. As for the orange peel, take it or leave it. I had a bartender burn the peel and rub it on the rim, very good.

My favorite drink. And if you watch the video, it IS stirred (not shaken). I sometimes just make mine over ice, too, and have it on the rocks.
