These bars are a cross between healthy energy snacks and gooey brownies or chocolate chip cookies. Ree makes them for her son, Todd, who is both a healthy sportsman and a huge fan of chocolate.

Ingredients
- 2 sticks (1 cup) cold salted butter, cut into cubes, plus softened butter, for the baking dish
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups rolled oats
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- One 13-ounce jar chocolate hazelnut spread, warmed
- 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
- Mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking powder and salt together in a bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle three-quarters of the mixture into the prepared baking dish and pat lightly to compact it a little. Spoon the chocolate hazelnut spread evenly over the surface, dispersing it as needed.
- Sprinkle the remaining quarter of the oat mixture over the top and pat lightly again.
- Bake until light golden brown on top, 35 to 40 minutes. Remove from the oven, then sprinkle over the mini chocolate chips and let cool in the pan, about 40 minutes.
- Cut into 16 bars and serve.

I liked these bars a lot. Mine came out nicely. I would say that when bars came out of the oven, I took a knife and smoothed out the chocolate chips.
Something is off with this recipe. The bars were crunchy ,hard, crumbly. Burnt around edges, but golden brown on bottom. Had trouble cutting them out of pan. Added additional 1/4 cup of chocolate hazelnut spread as 13 oz jar was not enough. Do not feel chocolate chips on top add anything. They did not firm up, stayed soft so that made it messy to cut.
Made this a second time and pulsed the oatmeal/butter mixture in food processor. Dough came together better, than with using pie dough cutter, but they were still crispy and hard. Baked less time also. Still burnt on edges but not as much. Recipe definitely needs adjustments.
Delicious. I shared with many of my friends and everyone loved it. I was worried because there were only 2 reviews and they were polar opposites. I looked at Ree’s other oatmeal bar recipe which was very similar. Most people liked it but thought it was too sweet. So… I made this recipe with only 1/2 cup of brown sugar. It was plenty sweet. I will make again with that 1 change.
Made these yesterday and put in fridge overnight. Added vanilla to oatmeal mixture and instead of adding chocolate chips, added chopped hazelnuts on top before baking. Will definitely make again.
Made these on Sat, after watching the episode… Not good! The ratio for the base/topping is definitely “off”. Too much flour, maybe?? My husband and I really wanted to like them, but didn’t.
