This side dish comes together quickly and easily. Even when put over pasta, it tastes wonderful.

Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup white sugar
  2. 2 cups water
  3. ½ cup shortening
  4. ½ cup white sugar
  5. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  6. 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  7. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  8. ½ teaspoon salt
  9. ½ cup milk
  10. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place 1 cup of sugar and 2 cups water into a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. In a medium bowl, cream together the shortening and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk so the batter does not become too stiff. Stir in vanilla.
  3. Pour the sugar water into a 2 quart casserole dish. Drop the chocolate mixture by spoonfuls into the sugar syrup to make dumplings.
  4. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes in the preheated oven. Use a slotted spoon to remove dumplings to plates, spoon syrup over and serve.

This was very similar to a pudding cake. The method is a little different but the taste to a pudding cake is the same. It’s good for a quick, yummy dessert.

This recipe is a family favorite for three generations. However, we like it better with butter instead of shortening. Serve this warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream, and it is very similar to a gooey brownie sundae. I’ve never seen it result in dumplings, precisely. It usually looks more like a cake with wonderful chocolate syrup underneath that you can drizzle over the ice cream. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

it was easy to mix but i put it in the oven and it just went horribly wrong. it tasted soggy and gross. i dont know if i did it wrong but i will never try to make it again

it’s quite simple, and very very sweet; in my opinion, not precisely a beauty: it came out as a cake, more or less, and only some indentations could remind you of dumplings…but my 6 year old and my hubby proclaimed it a hit, so.
