In my family, Christmas would not be the same without our Cherry Dots, a cookie tradition.

Prep Time: 40 mins
Cook Time: 15 mins
Additional Time: 4 hrs
Total Time: 4 hrs 55 mins
Servings: 48
Yield: 8 dozen cookies

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup butter, softened
  2. 1 cup white sugar
  3. 2 tablespoons milk
  4. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  6. ½ teaspoon salt
  7. 34 candied cherries
  8. 1 cup chopped walnuts (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Stir in milk and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour and salt.
  2. Divide the dough into two equal pieces, and shape each half into a 12 inch roll on a sheet of waxed paper. Place 17 candied cherries side by side on top of each roll, and press into the roll until the cherries are centered. Mold dough around cherries. Sprinkle the outside evenly with chopped walnuts. Wrap the dough in the waxed paper, and refrigerate 4 hours to overnight.
  3. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  4. Cut each roll into 1/4 inch slices, and place the slices onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake in the preheated oven until golden, 12 to 15 minutes.

This is a wonderful holiday cookie. Followed the recipe as posted and they came out perfect! Not to sweet. And my favorite part was when several if them came out with a perfect heart shape cherry. Thank you for this cookie! It made so many with such little effort. Chill overnight for best results.

These cookies taste OK but it is really difficult to bake them just enough so that they don’t get really dark on the bottom if baked enough or are under baked if the bottoms are a nice color. I tried lowering the temperature and cutting them more thinly than suggested which helped somewhat. I will not bake these again.
