Chele’s Halibut

  4.7 – 43 reviews  • Halibut

I give this dish to a deceased friend who had a talent for cooking delicious food. My personal favorite method of preparing halibut, it goes well with crusty bread and a salad for a supper fit for company.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 4
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  1. 2 pounds halibut steak, 1 1/2-inch thickness
  2. 1 cup sour cream
  3. ½ cup chopped green onions
  4. 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  5. ½ teaspoon salt
  6. ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
  7. 1 pinch dried dill weed
  8. ⅓ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Grease the inside of a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  3. Place halibut in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Mix sour cream, green onions, butter, salt, white pepper, and dill in a bowl.
  5. Spread sour cream mixture over halibut.
  6. Bake halibut in preheated oven until fish flakes easily with a fork, 20 to 25 minutes.
  7. Remove halibut from the oven and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  8. Place oven rack about 6 inches from broiler heat source and turn on oven’s broiler.
  9. Place under preheated broiler and broil until cheese is lightly browned, 2 to 3 minutes.

1-14-2019 ~I recognized this recipe as being very similar to another recipe from this website, “Halibut Sitka” The difference appears to be that this recipe does not include mayonnaise in the sour cream mixture, and it tops the fish with Parmesan at the end. I enjoyed this well enough, tho’ I did use a higher temperature, 400 degrees, which I would recommend baking for 10-15 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish. I enjoyed this, but I wasn’t wowed, even tho’ I made sure to give it a little zip with some garlic powder. It turns out quite pretty, especially served with fresh asparagus and rice, but it actually would have benefited by a little zing from some mayo. In addition, I am not terribly fond of Parmesan with fish but I have no regrets for giving it a try.

This was a really easy way to prepare Halibut and the flavors were great. I substituted plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream and it tasted fantastic. The parmesan is an interesting twist with the first, but it works really well.

Love it! Husband loves it! About the third time I made this recipe. I usually use plain yogurt, but this time I used sour cream, I used minced onion, as I didn’t have green onion on hand. I’m also pretty liberal with the Dill. I think it really adds to the flavor. I cooked it for 22 mins and honestly I would have been better off taking it out at 19 mins or so, so keep an eye on your fish! It was firm, but not dried out. Still delicious!!!

I didn’t really like the flavor. The sour cream makes this dish too bitter. And the sauce was too thick.

Wow – loved this recipe. Mad it exactly like the recipe – lots of flavour, lots of sauce. Love this!

I’ll make it again!

We really like this! I cut the recipe in half cuz there is just two of us but we both really liked it. Next time I will use fresh grated Parmesan I only had the jar kind, and I didn’t have any dill weed so will have to get some for the next time. Easy recipe and delicious!

I have a freezer full of halibut and sockeye salmon from last summer’s AK fishing trip so I’m always searching for new recipes. Glad I found this one. I was out of sour cream so I decided to substitute plain whole milk yogurt and add some minced garlic. My wife’s opinion was that it was “the best fish I’ve ever had”. We eat lots of fish so that statement speaks volumes. Trying it tonight with sour cream. A++++

I’ve fixed this for a dozen different guest occasions and it’s a hit every time. Don’t sub anything, if you think you have to do something, I would add more of the topping than the recipe calls for. I notice people scraping the topping on their plates to get the most they can on their fish. If you add more topping, increase the cooking time a little. Thanks Barbie!

Have made this twice now and it is delicious – will become a regular for sure. We just added some dashes of hot sauce and lemon juice which some similar recipes also had – great flavor and an easy crowd pleaser for dinner parties. I was asked for the recipe by happy guests. Good with small fingerling roasted potatoes and asparagus or fresh green beans.

I cut down on the butter by half and the sauce was still good. I only got to taste it the next day and thought it was fine, but husband seemed to really enjoy it. I thought that the divine halibut recipe, which was sort of similar, tasted better.

We didn’t care for this at all. The sour cream mixture got weird and separated when it cooked and just looked unappealing. I followed the recipe exactly and also didn’t care for the flavor combinations. I won’t be making this again.

Delicious. I would put the onions and sour cream in the blender next time for a different sauce and definitely sirachi
