A tomato cream sauce tops this delectable pasta dish with sausage and cheese. It’s like macaroni and cheese for adults!

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 35 mins
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  1. 1 (16 ounce) package uncooked pasta shells
  2. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  3. ½ tablespoon finely minced onion
  4. 1 orange bell pepper, thinly sliced
  5. 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  6. 1 pound bulk Italian sausage
  7. 1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
  8. 1 cup heavy cream
  9. 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  10. 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Fill a large pot with lightly salted water and bring to a rolling boil over high heat. Stir in pasta and return to a boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until cooked through but still firm to the bite, about 13 minutes; drain.
  2. Meanwhile, heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, orange pepper, and garlic; cook and stir until tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in Italian sausage; cook and stir until browned and cooked through, about 8 minutes. Stir in undrained tomatoes and heavy cream; reduce heat to medium-low and cook 5 minutes more.
  3. Mix pasta into sauce; stir in the Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh parsley.

Agree with an earlier commenter Jillian that 16 oz pasta is too much and 8-12 oz is much better. I also made some of her other changes such as the 2 cans of diced tomatoes which works better than stewed due to short cooking time, added 1 tsp Italian seasoning and 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes, crumbled the sausage (I didn’t fry separately though as I liked/wanted the grease/flavor). I also added 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella to the dish, along with the 1 cup parmesan to make it extra cheesy.

This was delicious! Very easy to make and it hit the spot!

Excellent. Just need to add a little more stewed tomatos.

Delicious! I used wide noodles instead though, so next time I need to use less pasta. I also added a little basil and pepper, otherwise made it exactly as the recipe said. Family all seemed to like it, so I’m happy! It was a last minute decision. I knew I wanted to use sausage and pasta but didn’t know what else. I searched for a recipe with those ingredients and found this recipe. Love this website!

This is definitely a keeper. I added celery to the peppers onions and garlic. Bleneded w half of the tomatoes and pinch of oregano and thyme.

Very good. I increased the garlic and cheese. Used half the pasta and half & half instead of the cream.

I made it pretty much true to the recipe, except I didn’t have heavy cream, so I used a little milk and some Velveeta cheese. I also thought the dish looked like it could use some spice, so I added Cajun spices and Cayenne pepper. We were pleased with the results, but agreed that it might have been better with 1/2 the sausage (perhaps medallions) plus some chicken. Regardless, one of the things I liked about the recipe was how easy it was to adapt the portion size. There’s only two of us and we don’t love tons of leftovers, so I appreciated that I was able to create just enough for a meal. And it was quick and super easy.

Fantastic! I added some sliced mushrooms and a lot more garlic, plus some Italian seasoning to the meat. Also used more parmesan than was called for. Will definitely make it again!

There’s nothing I would change except I use bow tie pasta, but that is my choice, not needed to make it better. We all love it!

My guys loved this! I did not use heavy cream (sorry) but followed the rest of the recipe. They found it delicious and ate 2nds each meal. (Lasted for 2 meals using farfalle.)

Yeah…this was awesome and easy. The only thing I changed was that I used fire roasted tomatoes rather than stewed tomatoes. Great recipe. Go make it. Now.

2.12.21 … https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/188824/cheesy-sausage-pasta/ … ‘Good, but not better than my usual creamy-tomato sauce. Lots more calories, here. 😮

My husband and I both loved this dish. I did add red pepper flakes and used about 1/4 cup of onion. I also added a dash of oregano. Delicious with a little kick! Will definitely make this again!

This was a good quick meal that I’ve made a few ways now. This time I substituted cream cheese and added tomato sauce. It’s easily adapted to the Instant Pot.

Yum!!!! I made this as written except I used crushed tomatoes and spaghetti noodles since that’s what I had on hand. This will definitely be a keeper in our house!

I added some fresh basil, oregano and since I doubled it I used 1 lb mild Italian. sausage and 1 lb hot italian sausage. I also browned it separate from the veggies and then combined. Used small rigatoni. It was delicious . Pleased my large Italian family yesterday (Sunday dinner). Great change from traditional Sunday meal. Complimented with home made bread, stuffed artichokes and Ceaser salad!!!

Really nice recipe. I used turkey Italian sausage and Half and half but did everything else the same. My sauce was a good consistency, not too runny. I used Penne for the pasta. Will definitely make this again.

Well, maybe if you half the pasta it’s ok. My husband wasn’t impressed. I was hoping to make this to have as a frozen meal, but I would have to add something…. It was worth a try. Sorry I didn’t like it that much 🙁

This was good! and easy to make. I did everything as written, only I had to use light cream because it was all I had on hand. Thanks!

Very tasty and full of flavor. Was a little dry so I added about 1/2 cup of mozzarella for a more creamy texture. Will make it again.
