Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 4 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon lightly packed orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 8 (1-inch thick) slices sweet batard or brioche
- 3 or 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (1/2 stick)
- Honeyed Strawberries, recipe follows
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 vanilla bean, split lengthwise and seeds removed
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 pound strawberries, hulled, and halved lengthwise
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, orange zest, vanilla, cardamom, and salt until eggs are broken up and evenly combined. Soak 3 bread slices in egg mixture turning once, until soaked through, about 4 minutes total.
- Meanwhile, melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. When butter foams, place 3 pieces soaked bread in the pan and cook until browned, about 2 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining bread. Serve topped with Honeyed Strawberries.
- Mix honey, vanilla, and orange juice together in a medium bowl until honey is dissolved. Add strawberries, stir to coat, and let sit until berries give off their juices, at least 5 minutes. Stir briefly before using.

This is easily some of the best French Toast I’ve ever had! I love the way it smells!
Yum! I added more zest (maybe a tablespoon and the juice from 1/2 an orange. Will add more cardamon next time and probably more juice. Used a french baguette cut on the diagonal. My hubby inhaled and loved it! 5 stars with my additions. :
I’ve tried this twice. The first time I was impatient and hurried the cooking time resulting in soggy, undercooked pieces of bread. But since the flavor was great I thought I’d give it a second chance. This time round I made sure the pan was good and hot and I allowed 3 minutes a side on the frying time. The result was a nice crispity outside and a flavorful moist inside. It really is worth the time and effort to get a good loaf of challah bread and to seek out some quality cardamom. Very tasty and a change from the run of the mill french toast of my youth (yute).
Best Flavor ever! The cardamom really enhances the orange zest flavor. My famiily loved it.
I’ve been making French Toast for 40+ years, and still consider it to be my favorite ‘griddle’ foods. I have to say this is hands down, by far the best French Toast I ever made. I even baked a loaf of homemade Brioche the day before, and used it in the recipe. Thanks Aida for hosting such a great show. I can’t bear to watch Paula make a fool out of herself on national television any more. Nice to see someone give clear and serious instructions in the kitchen, instead of horsing around and acting stupid.
This is my new favorite, easy to make breakfast. Cardamom is a must to get the real essence of this recipe.
This was the very first french toast I ever made and I actually really liked it. But I wished there was more sweet to it. I think I will add more honey to topping next time. Overall, really easy and so good~~
I also was unable to find the recommended bread, i used regualr bread, but it came out too sogy even without soaking the bread pieces. The recipe though was excellent. I subtituded equal parts nutmeg, and cinnamon for the Cardamom to make the amount of cardamom needed.
Also i thought the strawberries needed a little something, their taste was to overpowering for the french toast, when i made it this morning for my family. I will deffinatly make this again, just add a little more honey, and a different type of bread

I was unable to find recommended bread, so I substituted Sourdough. Loved the cardamom, and the only other change I made was the addition of cinnamon to mixture. Very tasty!
The orange zest added a nice flavor, but my french toast was way too soggy. Perhaps the bread I used was too soft, I should have used day old bread.
I’m going to try this recipe again, but I am not going to allow the bread to soak up the batter.
The strawberry mixture was wonderful!
