An innovative take on a classic! Use a can of sweetened condensed milk that has caramelized inside after being simmered for three hours to spruce up your apple crisp. Though absurd, it actually works!

Total Time: 4 hrs 10 mins
Servings: 10
Yield: 1 9×13-inch pan

Ingredients

  1. 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  2. 5 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced
  3. 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  4. 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  5. ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  6. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  7. ¼ cup water
  8. 2 cups rolled oats
  9. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  10. ½ cup brown sugar
  11. ½ teaspoon baking soda
  12. ¼ teaspoon salt
  13. ½ cup melted butter

Instructions

  1. Place unopened can of sweetened condensed milk in a large pot; fill pot with water to cover. Bring water to a simmer, and simmer can for 3 hours, adding hot water as needed to keep can covered. Remove can from water with tongs; allow to cool, about 20 minutes.
  2. Place apples in a large bowl. Whisk 1 tablespoon flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a small bowl; stir mixture into apples. Pour apple mixture into a 9×13-inch baking pan. Stir vanilla extract into water in a bowl; sprinkle over apple mixture.
  3. Open cooled condensed milk carefully. Stir caramelized milk until smooth; drizzle evenly over apple mixture.
  4. Stir oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt together until combined; stir in butter until crumbly. Spread crumble mixture over apples and caramel.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until apples are tender and crumble is lightly browned, about 25 minutes.
  6. You can also cook the sweetened condensed milk in a slow cooker. Place the can in slow cooker with water to cover; cook on High for 1 hour, then on Low for 4 hours. You can cook more than one can at a time; store unopened cans in the pantry.

Very Yummy! Might use a little less caramelized milk next time to reduce sweetness and a little more butter to really crisp up the top. I cooked at 350 for 35 minutes to get it nice and bubbly. i never saw in the recipe what the oven temp should be.

very nice…a bit on the sweet side, maybe i would use less of the caramel next time. Made it without the graham crust…..and used lots of apples… Husband thought it was great!
