Ingredients
- Wooden sticks
- 6 Fuji or Granny Smith apples
- 1 bag candy corn
- 1 bag licorice bits
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 4 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/8 cups corn syrup
- 3/4 teaspoon red food coloring
Instructions
- Clean apples. Place a wooden stick in the center of the apple. Set aside. Place the candy corn and licorice in separate bowls.
- Place the water, sugar, and corn syrup in a clean 3-quart saucepot. Stir to form wet sand.
- Place on medium flame until the sugar boils; at that point increase the heat to high. Occasionally, wash sides of pot with cold water and a brush, if needed, to prevent crystallization. Cook on high heat to 283 degrees F. Add red food coloring and swirl around in the pot; do not stir. Continue to cook to 300 degrees F. Remove from the heat and let rest for 3 minutes.
- Dip the apple on an angle, rotating the apple clockwise, to coat the apple. Immediately roll the apple in candy corn or licorice. Set aside to cool.

the whole thing turned out to be a mess and in the end my kitchen was coverd in red
candy mixture scorches easily due to cooking so high or maybe because it reaches such a high temp. it can be cooked on a lower temperature as long as it is boiling and it will harden properly if it is cooked to 315 degrees. it is also much tastier if cinnamon red hots are added to mixture. they need to be added at the beggining because it takes a while for the red hots to melt.
My husband and I have made this twice. The first time we filled the room full of smoke and burned the candy horribly. The second time we made it we took the candy of the heat at 305 degrees and the temperature contine up to 328. We decorated the apples and they looked great. The candy was like a jolly rancher texture when placed on the apples. You could not bite into them. We had to cut the apples open to be able to eat them.
Would have liked the candy to have been a little softer, so you could have bite into the apple.

I did as the recipe said, but the coating never would stick to the apples very well. I tried putting the candy corn on the apples and it wouldnt stick. It just kept sliding off. I tried sticking the apples in the freezer and that didnt work either. So the apples werent pretty, and the candy never hardened…but they tasted delicious!
