A very tasty, flavourful, and slightly more crunchy burger.

Ingredients

  1. 2 pounds extra-lean ground beef
  2. 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
  3. 1 egg, lightly beaten
  4. 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
  5. 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  6. ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  7. ¾ cup rolled oats

Instructions

  1. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium high heat and lightly oil grate.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the beef, onion soup mix, egg, hot sauce and oats. Shape into 6 patties.
  3. Grill patties over medium high heat for 10 to 20 minutes, or to desired doneness.

I liked it! All I did that wasn’t in the recipe was cooked some around 3 or 4 slices of bacon and barbecue sauce as a topping, and halfed the oats to about 1/2 cups, and it tasted perfect! Perfect Barbecue Burger! (Edit: The first time I made this recipe, it felt more like meatloaf and less than a burger pattie, so that’s why I reduced the oats.) 😀

Best burger ever? No, but this is still a very tasty burger. I can see why others think there are too many oats, but the amount was fine with me. I suggest mixing up the patties ahead of time so the oats have time to absorb moisture and soften, or maybe pulse the oats in a food processor first so there aren’t any big pieces. On their own, the patties would probably need a bit more seasoning, but once all the burger toppings are on, the overall flavor is great. I would only grill these 3-4 minutes per side max, otherwise the burgers will be way overcooked.

This was incredibly easy to make and the burgers went over well with our company (only second to the bacon cheeseburgers but who can fight bacon?). As far as how I made it, I used bread crumbs instead of the oats, put in a chopped garlic clove and added a Tbsp of green tomato relish, as someone previously suggested. In addition, I left the extra spicy green relish out and it was being added to the burgers after they were cooked. All in all, an enjoyable experience to prepare, all the way around.

The burgers were juicy and delicious. I didn’t have onion soup mix, so I chopped 1 onion and added to the meat. I increased the hot pepper sauce and worchestershire sauce to 1 tablespoon each. I was very pleased with the results! I didn’t grill all burger so had some the following day with mushrooms and peppers added. Very good!

I made these but instead of using oats, I used 3/4 Cup Food Lion’s Italian Bread Crumbs. Used 1/8 tsp. Cheyenne Pepper instead of the hot sauce. Put 2 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce, 2 cloves of minced Garlic (you can sub Garlic Powder if you don’t have cloves of garlic on hand). I put 3 Tbsp Milk into the mixture. Used 1 medium size egg. 1/4 tsp Black Pepper. By using the bread crumbs & seasonings mentioned here, vs the Lipton Onion Soup mix, it cuts back sodium content, and still gives the grilled burger awesome flavor! They were seriously Good!

I made half an order. 1 lb. ground beef. (It was grass-fed beef, and delicious) I halved the oatmeal, it was just too much! A little too much like meatloaf, still delicious It was cooked over a gas bbq in a frying pan. A touch or two of some leftover bacon grease added to flavor! .

This is a great recipe. I used 85% lean meat, skipped the hot sauce (family members’ preference), and used bread crumps since I did not have rolled oaks. The humbuggers turned out great. Thank you for the recipe!

I add extra seasonings and reduce the onion soup mix due to the sodium and reduce the rolled oats as I like a beefier burger. For 10 lbs lean ground beef, I add 3 envelopes of onion soup mix, 5 eggs, 2/3 cup rolled oats, 2/3 cup soft bread crumbs (I save ends in the freezer and process in the food processor) 10 tbsps Worchestire sauce, 2 1/2 tsps each black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, minced garlic and Montreal steak spice. This yields 36 5 ounce patties for the freezer.

Made these burgers tonight and my husband liked them, which says a lot. Very tasty with barbecue sauce and an onion ring on top.I used bread crumbs from multigrain bread instead of the oats, and added bacon bits (what’s not good with bacon?) but the burgers didn’t seem to hold together well. Next time will try the oats

Love these burgers. Followed recipe with two changes. I chopped a fresh onion and tossed with a tspn of olive oil and softened in the oven before adding to the rest of the ingredients and I did not add the dry soup mix.

These turned out pretty dry. Had to cop them up for the kids and serve it to them like meatloaf otherwise they wouldn’t eat them. They were also surprisingly bland. If I make these again I will cut down on the oats and add pickle relish like another reviewer stated.

Read reviews before I made this recipe. Since a lot of them said it’s more of a meatloaf texture, I decided to just make meatloaf instead of hamburgers. I added fresh diced onion as well, (just a small one). It was great. Husband loved it. He wanted to save some for lunch the next day, but had to go back and finish it all off then. Asked him if he thinks he would like it as a hamburger and he said yes. So, maybe next time I’ll make a hamburger to see how we like it that way. I will for sure use this as my go to meatloaf recipe for now on.
