With just a tinge of citrus, this is the traditional Long Island Iced Tea. Use premium liquors to make it at its best. You might not know how much alcohol you’re ingesting because it tastes so nice despite being quite strong.

Ingredients
- 2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ cup shortening
- 1 ¼ cups white sugar
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup applesauce
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 13×9 inch baking pan.
- Melt chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl over a pan of simmering water. Stir frequently until smooth. Remove from heat, and let cool.
- Cream together the shortening and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, stirring constantly until well blended. In a separate bowl, mix together applesauce, melted chocolate and vanilla. Add to the egg mixture, stirring until smooth.
- Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt; gradually stir into the batter. Fold in chopped walnuts. Spread evenly into the prepared pan.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle of cake comes out clean. Let cool in pan before cutting.

I added ginger, allspice and two cups of dried fruit. raisins, cranberries and dates. Then topped with walnuts. Best bar I ever made!!
We had enjoyed the applesauce walnut bars. We would suggest to add more walnuts.
Very moist, not chewy, didn’t have a defining flavor. Meaning, you could taste something but it wasn’t either applesauce or chocolate. As weird as this might sound, needs to be sweeter or it was missing something. Mine were falling apart around the walnuts. Not crumbly just not holding shape very well when pulling out of the pan in bar form. Not sure if I’d make again however, at most for me, they were just okay.
I was trying for a lower sugar brownie and this worked with 3 oz of chocolate, 1 cup of sugar and 1/2 c whole wheat pastry flour and 1/2c regular flour with 1/2t baking powder. I baked in a 9×9 pan for 25-30 minutes. They were so good hot out of the oven. Could add chocolate chips for more chocolate punch.
These bars are rather nondescript. They did not have enough chocolate or applesauce to take on either flavor. They also were rather cakey. I prefer chewier bars.
