With fresh apples, almonds, and cinnamon, this recipe for apple bars comes together quickly. At my house, these scarcely last a day and are excellent!

Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 50 mins
Servings: 16
Yield: 16 squares

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  2. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  3. ¼ teaspoon salt
  4. 2 ¼ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  5. 2 tablespoons white sugar
  6. ½ cup packed brown sugar
  7. ½ cup white sugar
  8. ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  9. 1 large egg
  10. 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  11. ½ cup chopped apple
  12. ½ cup finely chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9-inch square pan.
  2. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon into a medium bowl. Stir 2 tablespoons white sugar and remaining 2 teaspoons cinnamon together in a small bowl.
  3. Mix brown sugar, 1/2 cup white sugar, and melted butter together in a large bowl with a wooden spoon until smooth. Stir in egg and vanilla. Blend in flour mixture until just combined, then stir in apple and walnuts. Spread mixture evenly into the prepared pan and sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture over top.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until the top springs back when lightly pressed, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into 16 squares.

Tastes like an apple brownie. I did have to add a bit of cream to the dough because it was way too dry. I baked it in an 11×7 Pyrex pan. I only sprinkled a little bit of the sugar mixture on the top.

I doubled the recipe, it turned out great. The only thing I would change would be not so much cinnamon and sugar at the end. I baked it in a 9×11 pan and cooked it about 35 minutes.

It was very good and by the time I posted this (after I cooked it) it disappeared! I might try (like the post below) to double the recipe and put in a 9”x13” pan to make it thicker!

Nice recipe, very easy to make! I tripled this to make sheet cake on a cookie sheet, got 1 1/3 sheets out of 3 recipes. I cut the brown and white sugars by 1/3 and used only about 1/2 of the sugar/cinnamons sprinkle Klee on top. Very moist, tasty apple squares!

I made a double batch they were good only next time I will measure all the ingredients in separate dishes. Really tastee yummy. The right size pan,s are also a plus. Good luck.

Hard as a rock and way too much cinnamon on top. I won’t make it again. Maybe something is wrong with ingredient amounts.

For gluten, simply substitute with gf flour. These are delicious and I always have someone asking for the recipe.

Loved this recipe but instead of using walnuts I used a granola and it was really yummy . If u are doubling this recipe use a 9×13 pan.

I made the recipe exactly as written, except my dish was 8×8 instead of 9×9. I baked it at 350 for 30 min. I used a full apple, however much that was. The finished product was very moist. I can understand how some reviewers didn’t like that because it’s not what they expected, but the taste is fantastic and the people I served it to went back for seconds. That’s a hit in my book. The cinnamon/sugar topping is too much. Cut it in half. Otherwise I recommend sticking to the recipe.

These are so delicious and easy! I added just a bit more apple the second time I made them, but they were great the first time too. Now a favorite go-to!

First I love taste and moistness of bars — will make again — nice desert to curb sugar urge plus I love apples — quick and easy to make. Also appreciated everyone’s suggestions for modifying recipe with different ingredients. Made minor changes by using lunchbox cup of unsweetened applesauce instead of butter and increased apples to 1 cup — Increased Cinnamon in batter to 1/2 teasp and added 1/4 teasp Nutmeg — decreased sugars in half for topping. Next time will bake in 8×8 pan as one reviewer suggested — make thicker bars. I liked one reviewer’s suggestion: substitute nuts for 1/2 cup oatmeal and still use apples — or another reviewer suggestion chocolate chips which could be combined with 1/2 cup oatmeal minus apples/nuts and use butter instead of applesauce. Another reviewer let bars cool then sprinkled with Powdered Sugar — will try with Stevia Confectioners Sugar — am sure will like that as well. Again thanks everyone for your wonderful, thoughtful suggestions.

Ok I followed the recipe however it took 45 mins at 350, so I upped the oven to 375, for 15 mins, the apple squares finally browned nicely and felt done in the middle but I turned off the oven and kept the apple squares in the oven just to be sure they baked thoroughly.

My family loved these. So easy and delicious. Perfect snack. I only changed one ingredient. Walnut to Pecan due to allergies. Otherwise, I followed it exact. Thank you.

These are delicious & very quick & easy to make! Thank you, Barb P.

Quick, easy and delicious! The only change I would make is decrease the sugar cinnamon topping by 1/2 (1 T sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon). I will definitely make this recipe again! Thank you BarbieAnn!

Yummy squares that got rave reviews first time I made them. Definitely making them again!

Very delicious! Unfortunately you get very small bars per the serving size suggestion, so you don’t feel satisfied after one. I also don’t know if it was the recipe or the type of apples I used, but the bars turned out very wet. Like, I baked them for an extra 25 minutes than the time suggested, and they still tasted undercooked.

This is a delicious recipe! The only changes I made were reducing the sugar to 3 tablespoons and substituting the butter for applesauce. I also separated the egg yolk from the egg white and whisked the egg white to make it a bit more fluffy. They came out perfectly with no trouble whatsoever. I will certainly make these again.

Made this recipe exactly as printed, with only one substitution of pecans because I was out of walnuts. These were incredible. The batter was thick but I spread it out evenly in the pan and it cooked up perfectly and were some of the best I’ve ever made. I will be saving this recipe!
