My boys love these, and I do too. I add some extra cheese shredded for a little pleasure.

Prep Time: 25 mins
Cook Time: 50 mins
Total Time: 1 hr 15 mins
Servings: 8
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  1. 4 large eggs
  2. ¾ cup brown sugar
  3. ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  4. ¼ teaspoon salt
  5. 1 ½ cups milk
  6. 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  7. 5 tablespoons salted butter
  8. ⅓ cup brown sugar
  9. ¼ cup water
  10. 6 cups apples, peeled and sliced into 1/2-inch wedges
  11. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Mix eggs and brown sugar in a bowl until smooth. Whisk in flour and salt. Slowly add milk, stirring constantly until well combined. Stir in vanilla extract and set aside to rest.
  3. Melt butter, brown sugar, and water in a 10 1/4-inch cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Stir frequently until mixture starts to boil. Reduce heat to medium; swirl skillet, but do not stir, until mixture starts to thicken, about 2 minutes. Add apples and cinnamon. Cook and stir until apples are crisp-tender and starting to brown, 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Stir egg mixture and pour over the apples in the skillet.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until edges are golden brown and custard is set, 28 to 35 minutes.

Did whole thing in oven — probably should have skipped the water in Apple mixture.

this was very good. used only granny smith apples. i made a mistake by baking this at 375 degrees instead of 400. also, next time i would pre cook the apples. i like them softer.

Great recipe! Made it exactly to the recipe using honey crisp apples. Served warm with whipped cream. To get the apple slices consistent sized, I used a mandolin slicer.

This is SO delicious. I did not peel the apples because the pealing has so many nutrients.

I loved it. I will be making this again. A nice change from apple pie.

I followed the directions and it came out delicious. A 10.5 inch iron skillet is a #8. I used my #8 Wagner skillet which is about 80 years old and apples were perfectly cooked and slices lifted out easily. If you don’t have an old skillet, go to an antique store and buy one. The newer ones contain steel.

I know this is a good recipe, even without my changes. I used half Tuaca in the water portion and some orange juice after I used zest in the apples. **I usually half recipes on my own, but let Allrecipes do the substitutions. Shame, Allrecipes! – You didn’t reduce the butter! I had a feeling it was wrong and should have checked. Next time, I just do it myself. Came okay for that, but it affected the texture.

Was so good, I used Granny Smith and Red Delicious apples. Followed recipe and will definitely make again

Absolutely delish! We followed the recipe as written and used honeycrisp apples. I only substituted almond flour for the all-purpose flour. It’s like having apple pie without the crust. Pairs wonderfully with ice cream and coffee.
