Active: 30 min
Yield: 4 individual trifle dishes

Ingredients

  1. 1/2 cup half-and-half
  2. 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  3. 1/4 cup sweetened condensed milk
  4. 1/4 cup evaporated milk
  5. 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  6. 1/4 cup coffee liqueur
  7. 1 cup whipping cream, chilled
  8. 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  9. 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  10. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  11. 1/2 cup mascarpone cheese, at room temperature
  12. 24 soft ladyfingers
  13. 1 fresh mango, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  14. 1 pint fresh raspberries

Instructions

  1. For the spicy chocolate tres leches: In a small saucepan, whisk together the half-and-half, unsweetened cocoa powder, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and cayenne pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Simmer for 2 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the coffee liqueur. Cool before using.
  2. For the whipped cream: Pour the cream into a medium bowl. Using an electric hand mixer, beat the cream until soft peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and mascarpone. Mix until well combined.
  3. Dip the ladyfingers in the chocolate tres leches. Place 2 to 3 ladyfingers in the bottom of each trifle dish. Top with 1 tablespoon of the chocolate tres leches. Top with 2 tablespoons of the whipped cream mixture, and then a few pieces of mango and raspberries. Repeat the layers and garnish the top of each trifle with fruit pieces. Chill until ready to serve.

Its good, but the chocolate sauce is very strong. Less liquor & coco would have helped. The whipped cream & fruit were delicious.

I almost didn’t add cocoa powder to the tres leches as I am not a huge chocolate fan and usually tres leches aren’t chocolate flavored. I am glad I made it according to recipe- the chocolate and cayenne work very well! This is an interesting twist to tiramisu and it’s good. It is rich.

This is a great dessert. I’ve made it several times for company and everybody asks for the recipe. It’s hard to find ladyfingers, so I use vanilla wafers. It’s important NOT to assemble this in advance, or the cookies will turn to mush. I also double the amount of mango – it’s the most important part of the recipe. I top the dessert with broken cookies.

This was a big hit at our Mother’s Day meal! I made it into a cake instead of the four cups like Giada. I had to add more lady fingers to do this. Also crushed up some heath toffee chocolates and put them on top of the cake. I didn’t have cayenne pepper, so I used a little bit of crushed red pepper and that worked perfectly.

Tastes great but would add about 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon not 1 1/2 teaspoons. The Tres Leches worked for me. Sorry DinnerDiva.

I saw the show today and decided to make the Tiramisu for dessert as my hubby and I both thought it looked awesome – and I had some of the ingredients. Could not find soft (or hard ladyfingers or mascarpone cheese at my local Winn-Dixie so I bought madelaines and Philadelphia Indulgence White Chocolate and Cinnamon. The whipped cream/cheese filling came out nicely but the Tres Leches with Chocolate came out runny and never thickened up. The Mango I had was not good inside so I tossed it and just used raspberries. The whole thing was kind of a soupy mix and nothing like Tiramisu. I was very disappointed. I’d have rated it a one or two stars but it did taste good and hubby really liked it. I followed the Tres Leches Chocolate mixture as directed and because it was so soupy it just didn’t seem at all like tiramisu which I have made many times. Sorry but I won’t be making this one again – too expensive to be just a so-so dessert.

Made this tonight for our Cinco De Mayo Fiesta, delicious! Everyone loved it. I made a few changes: I made my tres leches thinner and dipped crunchy lady fingers into it. Worked perfectly. Served warm espresso cups of the left over chocolate tres leche. Delicious!
