Ingredients
- 1 whole large (or 2 small) onions
- 2 sticks butter (lots and lots of butter)
- 2 sticks butter (lots and lots of butter)
- 2 to 3 pounds cube steak (tenderized round steak that’s been extra tenderized)
- Seasoned salt, such as Lawry’s seasoned salt (or similar seasoned salt)
- 1/2 cups (approximately) Worcestershire sauce
- Hot sauce, such as Tabasco
- 4 whole French/deli rolls (Earthgrains are best!)
Instructions
- Slice the onions and cook in 1/4 stick butter until soft and light brown. Remove and set aside.
- Slice the cube steak against the grain. Sprinkle with seasoning salt.
- Heat 2 tablespoons butter over high heat (in same skillet) until melted and beginning to brown. Add the meat in a single layer. Cook one side until brown, and then flip and cook until brown, about a minute on both sides.
- Add 1/2 cup (at least) Worcestershire sauce, 5 to 6 shakes hot sauce and 2 tablespoons butter. Add the cooked onions. Stir to combine.
- Butter the halved French rolls and brown in a skillet.
- To assemble, lay the bottom half of a French roll on a plate. Place the meat mixture, followed by a spoonful of juice from the pan. Top with other half of roll, cut in half and devour!

We add Swiss cheese. Awesome sandwich
Made it! Don’t have any Lawry’s seasoning here in New Zealand so I just made my own with Garlic powder, onion powder, turmeric, paprika, brown sugar, salt & black pepper.
Used a nice Homekill steak that we pounded and seasoned. Toasted the bread. It was literally the most delicious steak sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. My husband and I like our steak cooked very differently so this is a great way to take that out of the equation.

Did not love this at all…really not great. My husband and son liked it. Will not be making again
I’ve made this quite a few times and some takeaways: do at least double the onions and cut the steaks thinner. Husband and son like mayo, cheese and lettuce and tomato added.
I know Ree likes butter, but my copy says 4 sticks of butter. Hoping it’s a typo. As no way in good conscious can I feed my hubs 4 sticks of butter. LoL So will try it with modifications
This sandwich is amazing!
I made this sandwich tonight and my family loved it!
I keep making this recipe. It resembles nothing of my own culture, so it’s an amazing treat!
Easy, great, definitely make again
Delicious. The bread is where almost a stick of butter goes. I would recommend a decent size stiffer roll. Cut the meat somewhat smallish due to the tough meat. We cut it in 3 inch strips, but maybe a little smaller next time.
