Beef Meatball Bourguignon

This meatball Bourguignon recipe is a hit with my household. It is a favorite of mine and a reasonably straightforward recipe to make, despite the lengthy cooking period. Over spaghetti, rice, biscuits, and potatoes, this is excellent. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound ground beef
  2. ¼ cup Italian-seasoned bread crumbs
  3. 1 egg
  4. ¼ cup minced onion
  5. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  6. ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  7. ½ teaspoon sea salt
  8. ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
  9. ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  10. 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  11. 10 baby carrots, thinly sliced
  12. ½ large onion, chopped
  13. ½ (8 ounce) package fresh mushrooms, sliced
  14. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  15. 1 cup red wine
  16. 1 cup beef broth
  17. 2 tablespoons garlic and herb seasoning blend (such as Mrs. Dash®)
  18. 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  19. 1 teaspoon sea salt
  20. 1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
  21. 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Mix beef, bread crumbs, egg, onion, garlic, parsley, salt, and pepper together in a bowl. Shape into fifteen 2-inch meatballs. Pour flour into a shallow dish; roll meatballs in flour until coated.
  2. Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium heat. Fry meatballs until browned on all sides and partially cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Add carrots, onion, mushrooms, and garlic to the same skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring often, for 10 minutes. Add red wine, broth, garlic and herb seasoning, thyme, salt, pepper, and bay leaf. Return the meatballs to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until flavors blend, about 2 hours.
  4. Instead of baby carrots, you can use 2 whole carrots, peeled and chopped.
  5. If you do not have the garlic and herb seasoning blend, add 1 teaspoon oregano, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt.
  6. If sauce needs to be thickened, you can add a little roux to it.
