I made this before and it was great I feel like if you want to add meet real lean turkey or real lean beef and if you want to use spices I kind of think cayenne pepper garlic maybe a little turmeric and pepper try to stay away from the sodium and for my bowl I like to add a splash of garlic hot sauce and in the pot I add a little bit of apple cider vinegar and I also had cauliflower and I do like to add yellow and orange peppers and the fancy purple carrots

One of my favorites! Easy, quick, delicious and lasts for days. It freezes well too! I always freeze half for my sister because she asks me to make it often. Packed with veggies and low calories! I’m sure you can add other veggies too but it’s so good as it is, I haven’t experimented. Oh another bonus, you add everything at the same time so as you chop the veggies you can just toss it in the pot, no additional dishes to wash – cutting board to potI (big pot FYI lol) hope everyone tries this.

No, as anyone just make it your own.

I made this exactly as the recipe calls for. While I agree that it is healthy, it is bland and not tasty enough to make you feel satisfied

Instead of cooking it in a pot on the stove, I cooked it in the crock pot. It was good. But I do miss the savory of fat. But I guess that’s the point.

Its really difficult to find the original “original” recipe, so I was happy to finally find this! To all the people changing up this “fat burning” recipe to their tastes-especially the ones adding meat or other proteins- you’ve really missed the point. This is perfect just as it is for weight loss or not for weight loss. And if you must add sour cream (!) try nonfat Greek yogurt instead!! I especially loved the woman who complained about all the sodium and then switched out the tomato juice for V-8!!!! I mean, really, read the label! Thanks so much for posting this recipe…just as it was.

This is my go-to vegetable soup recipe! After doing it by the book the first time, I’ve made these adjustments for personal preference: 1. Add a 10 oz. package of frozen peas and a 10 oz. package of frozen green beans to the main ingredients. 2. Add 3 bay leaves, 4 smashed garlic cloves, 2 tsp Italian seasoning, 1 tsp Kosher salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp red pepper flakes, and 1 seeded and diced jalapeño (optional) for flavor. 3. Sauté the carrots, celery, and onions (the Holy Trinity of Italian cooking) in olive oil for five minutes first, to soften, adding the spices for the last 30 seconds until fragrant.

Nope. Just gotta taste it for tiny changes. Stores well & rotisserie chicken tip. Amazing

It needs more flavor- I will try this again and add garlic and maybe a bay leaf or two

I fried the vegetables in oil prior to adding liquid as I think it provides a richer flavour.

We love it! A little flat as far as flavoring… Still very delicious… We added a medium amount of protein and a fair amount of crushed red pepper seeds. Cut down on the celery a bit. It over takes the flavoring of the soup. If we use beef as our protein…. We get the sour cream out…. It tastes like stuffed cabbages. Ditch the canned green beans and go fresh or at least frozen. Chopped asparagus goes nicely in this soup… We split our “tomato juice”… 1/2 low sodium V8 juice and 1/2 Spicy V8 juice. Zucchini is also popular with the family…. This soup and I F…. Pshhhh… I lose weight like crazy and fast.

This soup is excellent! It’s easy to make and tastes great. You should try this one even if you do not need to lose weight. I’ve been making it for years now.

Excellent for a filling meal for a few days when I want quick weight loss. I now sub V8 vs tomato juice, frozen green beans and I use a quality grass fed beef broth. To my bowl I do add a dash of sea salt, cracked black pepper, a few dashes of green tabasco and sprinkle of dried Asian garlic to suit my taste buds before serving. Does not affect weight loss and imo brings flavor up to super delicious!

I use bloody Mary mix instead of tomato juice and also added two pounds of hamburger.

Infinitely too much sodium for me!!!! I’d sub out the juice for the juice from no salt added diced tomatoes and add more tomatoes. I’d skip the broth and onion soup mix and replace with low sodium bone broth. And, because I really do need more protein than 4 gms per serving, I’d add at least 2-3 ounces of chicken per serving. What’s nice about this recipe is that you CAN add other vegetables to it, so I’d probably replace the canned green beans with fresh, and add some baby bella mushrooms for both taste and some extra vitamins and minerals, and consider adding more chopped zucchini and maybe eggplant. Mmmmmm…..

I been making variation of this recipe for over 20 years for weightloss. For dieting purposes everything ingredient must be sodium free, can tomatoes must = quantity of broth; and normally prepared with these only cabbage, celery, fresh onion, can tomatoes & broth only. It’s not intended to be a vegetable soup. Think fresh, low fat, sugar & salt free ways to flavor.

Very good for weight loss. I would make it as stated then. Ladle about four cups into a sauce pan and add curry one night. Then I would do the same with Italian Seasoning, then Taco, and mix it up. Maybe add a little ground chicken.

This recipe is totally customizable. To make it a more complete meal higher in protein I like to add Pinto or other beans. Fresh herbs are a nice touch as is serving with quinoa, rice or other starch to make your own Buddha bowl. I agree a whole cabbage is too much & the amount of tomato is overwhelming.

Yes, I need to lose the weight but I can’t live on just this alone, I need protein. I eat this just because I like it. I just v-8 instead of tomato juice. 1 regular and 1 spicy, it wakes it up a bit. Instead of beef broth I use better than bouillon, as much as I need to flavor it the way I like. This time I tried it with 1/2 green cabbage and 1/2 red. It turns out I like the red better. v8 and red cabbage are also healthier than just tomato juice and green cabbage. An excellent soup. It just needs some real beef in it which I’ll try next time. Some protein is also good for weight loss and it will make this soup healthier.

I have high hopes for this soup. Made it today and pretty much stuck to the recipe, but added a few spices for personal preference.I had a big bowl about 5 hours ago and I’m still full! If I weren’t testing the weight loss theory, I would add beef and potatoes or barley, and corn!
Sarah Ruiz
I wasn’t that impressed with this recipe. If I try this again I’ll substitute the tomato juice (which is loaded with salt) with no-salt tomato sauce. I would also add some red potatoes too.
