Ingredients
- 3 pounds potatoes, thinly sliced
- salt and pepper to taste
- 9 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 6 tablespoons butter, diced
- 1 quart whole milk, or as needed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Layer 1/3 of the potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish; season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons flour over top, then dot with 1/3 of the butter. Repeat layering twice more, then pour in enough milk to fill the dish 3/4 full.
- Bake in the preheated oven, checking every 15 minutes, until milk comes to a boil, 45 to 60 minutes. Reduce the heat to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and continue to bake until potatoes are tender, 45 to 60 more minutes.

I added sliced onion to each layer and a mix of mozzarella & cheddar cheese. Made a difference to flavour. Was much simpler then making a white sauce or cheese sauce.
I have been using this recipe since 12/25/2009! I have it printed with that date on it. It is my go to recipe for scalloped potatoes. Hubby, sons, in-laws love it.
No flavor. Flour did not mix with milk and butter. Horrible recipe.
To give this dish a rich depth I used 2 cups of buttermilk and 1 cup 1% milk in a roux for a smaller batch than the recipe called for. Sliced onion, paprika, garlic salt, pepper and parsley made these the best scalloped potatoes I’ve made.
I made this recipe and added thinly sliced onion on top of each layer of potatoes (my family loves their onions). The end result was a dish that everybody raved about — no leftovers. I used a mandolin to slice the potatoes so they cooked evenly. And I used a sifter to spread the flour so it too was even. The only issue I had was, the dish bubbled up and over in my stove creating a smoky mess in my oven. Not sure if I had too much milk, although the dish was not soupy when finished. In the future, I will make sure to place the dish on a jellyroll pan in the oven to avoid having any sort of mess to clean up. Thanks for a great recipe that I will definitely make again!
At last! I have long looked for a scalloped potatoes recipe that mimicked my mother’s. This is it. I used skim milk and extra flour. It took about 90 minutes, but it was well worth the wait. Thanks!
It was simple to make. My cousin came to visit me. We grew up together so this dish brought back many holiday memories . We made it together. Lots of fun.
