I don’t eat red meat and had no turkey bacon on hand so didn’t use any meat. Had one large sweet potato some green onion half a white onion, and cooked that in police oil. Then added cinnamon, pepper, salt, garlic powder, fennel, and chili pepper flakes. Sautéed it then put it in the oven for 30 minutes.
Very good, and how nice that it’s just for 2 people! Easy to make and a satisfying way to start the day. I increased the cinnamon to 1/2 tsp and like others, I topped with an egg. Thanks for a great recipe!
I used red garnet sweet potatoes. This was great. My only recommendation is to skip the brown sugar – the potatoes are plenty sweet on their own!
Pretty good for my first time making it. I didn’t have a whole onion so I chopped up a jalapeños and I used smoked turkey sausage, everything else was as suggested. The Mrs liked it so this recipe is a keeper.
LOVE THIS!! Had something very similar to this in a restaraunt while out of town. Came home and found this, so happy I did! Many times, I sub bacon for the ham. yum!! I also do not add the brown sugar bc I am not really a sweets person, the sweet potato is plenty for me. Top with a fried egg or two and a few dashes of hot sauce. I make this rather frequently and love it every time!
Just got done eating this and all I can say is, “yum”!! I adapted the recipe slightly to suit our personal tastes: I left out the brown sugar and added smoked paprika and lots of fresh ground pepper (keeping other spices the same). Cooked it in a cast iron skillet, then cracked 4 eggs over the top & placed the skillet in a 400 degree oven til the eggs were done to our liking. The soft yolks provided a lovely silky sauce that brought the whole dish up a notch. I will definitely be making this again soon! Thank you for this lovely recipe.
Great brunch pleaser and you can sneak in other leftovers.
this is a delicious recipe. I will certainly make again
I followed the suggestion of another cook and backed off the brown sugar a bit to make it more savory than sweet. It turned out well. My guest from another country asked for the recipe!
I absolutely loved this It has become a family favorite
Really good base recipe for getting creative. I’ve made this without ham, adding chopped apple and dried cranberries instead, and I’ve made it as written. As written, it needs a little kick of flavor – and not just more cayenne. I think I’ll try adding some chopped celery next time for crunch.
Instead of ham, I substituted bacon and scrambled eggs. My whole family loved this savory-with-a-sweet-potato-twist meal!
only chage was to use yams and very little sugar
This was really good! My husband doesn’t like sweet potatoes but was willing to try it. We both liked it! I used a little less cayenne pepper than it called for because I don’t like really spicy foods. I also served it with an over-easy fried egg on top as others suggested. It’s good without the egg, but the egg was a nice addition. I took a chance on this recipe and doubled it. We ate it for dinner the first day (my husband went back for seconds) and had the leftovers for breakfast a few days later.
Delicious! I doubled the recipe so I cut up potatoes and boiled instead of microwaving. I’m looking forward to eating the leftovers for breakfast with an o Er easy egg on top! This is definitely a winner that I will make again.
Made the recipe as written and it was wonderful! Added a fried egg with a soft yolk on top, and it was an amazing breakfast on a bitter cold day. Since I love heat, the cayenne amount was perfect.
Made it without the brown sugar everyone loved it.
I really enjoyed it please post more sweet potatoes recipes
I made this sweet potato hash pretty much according to directions except I used leftover chicken instead of ham. It was good and I’d make it again. Seems to me that corn beef would also be a good addition.
This recipe was a hit at my house! The only change I made was to reduce the cayenne pepper by half. It was perfect!
It was very good. Easy and a nice change from the normal hash or roasted potatoes
