Perfect BBQ Baked Beans

I’ve been modifying a similar recipe I found online awhile back to make it my own. These beans are a sweet, satisfying, and delicious addition to a platter of potato salad and the smoky BBQ that we all adore. Everyone always adores them!

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound ground beef
  2. 1 small onion, minced
  3. 2 tablespoons dry mesquite flavored seasoning mix
  4. 2 (28 ounce) cans baked beans (such as Bush’s Original®)
  5. ¼ cup molasses
  6. ¾ cup brown sugar
  7. ¾ cup barbeque sauce
  8. 2 teaspoons dry mustard powder
  9. 2 pinches cayenne pepper, or to taste (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, onion, and mesquite seasoning until the meat is no longer pink, breaking it up into crumbles as it cooks, about 10 minutes. Drain excess grease, and transfer the meat mixture to a large baking dish. Stir in the baked beans, molasses, brown sugar, barbeque sauce, dry mustard powder, and cayenne pepper, and mix until any small lumps of brown sugar have dissolved.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until the beans are bubbling and the flavors have blended, about 20 minutes.

So easy to make especially when you can mix them up one day and bake the next. Free’s up time and space to do other things and flavors have a longer time to blend. Always get request for these beans.

I made this for a family gathering and everyone loved it. I used Bush’s Best Honey Chipotle Grillin’ Beans and mesquite bbq sauce, otherwise followed the recipe. I made a double batch and had no leftovers everyone like them so much. Thanks for this recipe!

I was looking for a recipe that was like the one my mom used to make, and this is it! However, to mirror hers I use 1/2 lb ground beef and 1/2 lb bacon…. Since I use Sweet Baby Ray’s, I also use less brown sugar because I think it is pretty sweet already. Lastly, you can totally substitute Cajun seasoning for the mesquite seasoning, and it’s awesome! Always a hit at BBQs. Thank you for sharing!

I guess I’m too used to my baked beans, so this was way too sweet for me as written. I also did not like the ground beef texture here, but I did really like the mesquite smokiness and the cayenne. I also prefer using dried beans to start with, much less gloopy with no extra sugar or weird stuff. I’ll definitely use the mesquite and cayenne in my next batch of bbq beans, so thanks for the great idea.

This is a great recipe to make for summer grilling sides. Mesquite seasoning can be found in grill seasoning packets, usually around a dollar. The recipe does not call for the whole packet so it would be easy to double this recipe. I followed the recipe but decided to throw in another can of beans. Still tasted delicious and didn’t mess up the flavor. I will definitely be making this again.

Every time I make these beans, they get rave reviews. The only modification I make is that I flatten out the hamburger meat to about 1/4 thick on a piece of foil, rub on the bbq seasoning, and transfer to a wire rack that I use for smoking jerky. I smoke the hamburger for a couple hours before crumbling up it up and continuing the recipe as needed.

I cut the recipe in half and it was plenty for 4. I used my favorite BBQ sauce (Corkys) and it turned out great. If you like BBQ baked beans, you will like this.
