Making mashed sweet potatoes only requires four basic ingredients and takes 40 minutes. For a beautifully sweet and easy holiday or fall side dish that the whole family will enjoy, boil them until they are cooked, add warm milk, and mash until smooth and creamy.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  1. 6 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  2. ¾ cup warm 2% milk, or as needed
  3. ½ cup softened butter, cut into chunks
  4. ¾ cup maple syrup, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add sweet potatoes, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer until tender, 20 to 30 minutes. Drain and transfer to a bowl.
  2. Mash potatoes with a potato masher. Slowly mix in 1/2 cup warm milk at a time until desired consistency is reached. Stir in butter and maple syrup until well blended and butter is melted. Serve warm.
  3. Try brown sugar or honey in place of maple syrup if desired.
  4. Please note differences in ingredient amounts and total time when following the magazine version of this recipe. The magazine version includes cracked black pepper and chives as garnishes.

The only change I made was to bake the sweet potatoes (I had the oven going baking bread) and I prefer baked to boiled sweet potatoes. It was a hit. This was gobbled up in no time and already requested again. It was a smidgeon too sweet for me so I would cut back a little on the maple syrup in the future, but still very good.

I did modify a few ingredients based solely on our personal taste. I cut back the maple syrup and just didn’t think this needed that much butter. I also whipped the potatoes with my hand mixer instead of using a potato masher. I have a number of mashed sweet potato recipes that I make, and honestly, they all taste pretty much alike. These certainly were good, and a recipe I’d make throughout the year.

I really enjoyed these sweet potatoes! I drained the potatoes and added the butter first. Then I slowly added the milk until I liked the consistency. It was less than called for. Then I added the maple syrup, a little at a time, until I liked the sweetness. Again, a little less than called for. This is an easy recipe to make to suit one’s own preferences.

Very easy and tasty recipe! I cut the recipe in half since it’s just my husband and I at home, and there were still enough leftover for another couple of meals. I did cut down on the maple syrup and milk since my sweet potatoes mashed super easily and already seemed to have a lot of liquid from the melted butter. Will definitely be making it again!

Just made it for dinner and it came out good with very little brown sugar And butter. I will make it again.

The milk made it a soupy mess. Would not recommend adding it. Just stick with the butter

I just started preparing meals now that I am retired, so always looking for healthy recipes. This recipe confirmed that simple can be better. I did not add the maple syrup – the potatoes were sweet enough on their own. My potato cubes only took 15 minutes to be ready for mashing. As a side notes, I learned that boiled sweet potatoes retain more of the vitamins than roasting or baking them. My husband (a trained chef) loved them which I served alongside grilled lemon rosemary chicken breast and asparagus spears. Easy weeknight meal, even for me – the novice cook at 63 yrs old!!

I added a little bit of cinnamon to mine. Use real maple syrup.

To make a plant based version, I used orange juice instead of milk and vegan butter.

Very simple recipe. Here some details how I did it to clarify the proportions: 4 pounds of sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch slices. Boiled for about 15 min, then drained and mashed with 1 stick of cold butter (4 ounces), 6 ounces of warm milk, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Added 1.5 tablspoons of brown sugar, which was a little too much, but still tasted good. Next time I would add 1 teaspoon at a time, until you can taste the flavor. This amount was more than sufficient for a group of 20 people, as one of many side dishes. If you make this instead of regular mashed potatoes, the above would probably only serve 10-12 people.

So easy and decedent ! I put them in the food processor, little butter & maple syrup, then put into a pan and into the oven. Cooked off a bit of the liquid I had left. OMG everyone LOVED them!!!!

My potatoes are now soup-like. Read the ingredients fully.

Used less butter, less syrup, and did not cook potatoes in salt. Still very good.

I cooked mine with vanilla, cinnamon, and brown sugar. I cooked everything else the same. It’s delicious!

this is perfect, i boiled the sweet potatoes whole, and after they cooled the skin came right off. i did 1/2 stick butter, 1/4 c of syrup, but i did something different, i had some mccormick cinnamon sugar i used a little of that perfect. thats the way to do it.

Came out well. Just enough maple syrup to make it pleasantly sweet.

Delicious. I added a dash of Irish whiskey for a bit more flavor.

Honey was used instead of maple syrup

Makes for such a nice fall side dish. I followed advice of the other users using only half the butter and maple syrup with scratch the milk and added a touch of cinnamon!
