Homemade Taco Sauce

  4.8 – 149 reviews  • Sauces

I was given a recipe for kheer by an Indian acquaintance, and I made it vegan. Heavy cream and whole milk are called for in the original recipe. This is something I’ve cooked multiple times for vegan bake sales and always gets great reviews. I wish everyone would appreciate the adaption!

Prep Time: 5 mins
Cook Time: 20 mins
Total Time: 25 mins
Servings: 12

Ingredients

  1. 1 (16 ounce) can tomato sauce
  2. ⅔ cup water
  3. 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  4. 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  5. 2 teaspoons onion powder
  6. 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  7. 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  8. ½ teaspoon chili powder
  9. ½ teaspoon paprika
  10. ½ teaspoon white sugar
  11. ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Instructions

  1. Stir together tomato sauce, water, vinegar, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, garlic salt, chili powder, paprika, sugar, and cayenne pepper in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a simmer over low heat and cook until slightly thickened, about 20 minutes. Cool sauce slightly before serving.

OMG this taste just like my favorite sauce that is not available in local stores. The only change I made is using chipotle, chili powder, instead of paprika, because I was out of paprika, and I used homemade tomato sauce from my gardens this year. It’s a perfect amount of spicy!! Will be canning a bunch of this!!

Excellent and so easy to make. I had everything already in my cabinets. It taste even better than the stuff you buy in the stores.

I didn’t have any tomato sauce, but I blended a can of diced tomatoes with the rest of the ingredients. I used more like 1T of chili powder, added about 1/2 tsp salt since I didn’t have garlic salt. Used apple cider vinegar instead of white vinegar as another reviewer suggested. It’s simmering right now, but seems to be missing something. I will update my review after it sits in the refrigerator overnight. I do like knowing that there are no undesired ingredients in this sauce!

I did follow another cook’s suggestion and used fresh onion and garlic pureed in the blender. I needed to add another 1/2 teaspoon of chili powder for my taste. It did need the 1/2 teaspoon of sugar to balance it out. Made 2 half pint jars plus another 1/2 cup.

I quickly googled “Taco sauce recipes” while I disappointingly stood in the store looking at all the junk ingredients in prepared ones. This came up as highly recommended and for good reason! It tastes just as I thought it should! So delicious! We eat low carb so I subbed the sugar for powdered lakanto but other than that followed the recipe exactly. And all clean ingredients that I already have at home. Nothing better!

The only tomato product I had on hand was catsup so I didn’t use the vinegar nor sugar and it was AWESOME! Thank you!!

Can’t belive I’ve been buying taco sauce all these years, this is superb and so economical! It had just the right ratio of ingredients for me and I had everything in my pantry. I loved it. I sometimes tweek recipes but not needed for this one. I’ll never buy taco sauce again.

This is excellent! I made it exactly to the recipe. I froze 1/2 and just thawed out 1/4 to put on my egg burritos. YUM YUM! Delicious!

I used my own tomato sauce. I followed recipe as written otherwise. I am set! I have 2 containers in freezer and this recipe when I need more. Really good!

Supply chain interrupted taco sauce supply. Needed it for my burrito pie. Went to you guys and found this. Skeptical as ingredients seemed too simple. Made it with 1/2 cup water and seasoned salt vs garlic salt. 1/2 tsp cayenne seemed small enough amount for mild but my guests will think it a bit spicy. I like it. This was too easy. No more store bought for me.

Made as written. Delicious! Thanks for sharing.

I thought this sauce was amazing. Just like brand name taco sauces. This recipe is a keeper.

It’s just ok for me as written. Needed more spice to it. There was too much tomato flavor. I’ll tweak it next time.
