This recipe, a family favorite, will be included in each cookbook I give my children when they leave home and get married. It is a lovely dish that is vibrant and flavorful. It is addictive, so beware. This dish for bacon-fried cabbage will fill you up if you’re watching your weight or just searching for a veggie in your supper.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 25 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (1 pound) package bacon, finely chopped
  2. 1 teaspoon olive oil
  3. 1 medium onion, chopped
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 2 pounds diced cabbage
  6. ½ teaspoon salt
  7. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  8. ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Place bacon in a large skillet and cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, until browned and crispy, 7 to 10 minutes. Drain bacon slices on paper towels and remove most of the bacon grease from the skillet.
  2. Add oil to the skillet and heat over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. Add cabbage, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes; cook and stir until cabbage is tender, 10 to 15 minutes. If you prefer softer cabbage, cover the skillet while cooking to give it some steam.
  3. Crumble bacon into the skillet and mix with the cabbage until well combined.

If you like cabbage, this is about as good as it gets. I loved it but my husband didn’t enjoy it at all. Different strokes for different folks!

Was not sure what to expect but this was amazing. Family loved it too. Had it with jerk chicken and rice. Better than any Caribbean restaurant. I used precooked bacon bits which worked for making it easy.

I really loved this recipe!!!!! Next time I will leave off the chili flakes because it made it a little spicy for my husband who doesn’t want even a hint of heat. I will always use this recipe for fried cabbage. It is a keeper!!!!!

This recipe is pretty easy and absolutely delicious. Either as a side or a main course, it is just excellent. I did not use the pepper flakes as I ma intolerant to them. Also, I had savoy cabbage at the time so I used it. OMG! Talking about trying something good! This will be included in my rotation. Personally, I think this recipe has enough grease from the bacon to cook it. However, depending on the volume of your cabbage, you may need to add the olive oil. Will absolutely make it again!!!

I’m not familiar with cooking cabbage or what I think of as German-esque food, just because I wasn’t exposed to it growing up (we’re a turnip green/mustard green family). My husband’s family are of German descent and his family’s staple diet was American German-based…including 100 ways to cook cabbage. His parents have passed I wanted to bring back some of his old comfort foods. Deciding to start with cabbage, I chose this recipe because, well, BACON. He really liked it. I have a hard time rating it personally because I’m not quite to the point of liking the taste of cabbage. I added red pepper flakes to bump up the flavor. I cooked the cabbage in the bacon grease and in the future will probably decrease the amount because the cabbage tended to be a little greasy. Other than that, he was really happy with the dish and I’m happy to give him something that tastes like childhood.

I added a tablespoon of caraway seed and about 3 cups of spaetzle dumplings. Unbelievably good!

My family likes the way this dish came out . This year I’m thinking about adding this to my corn beef instead of the traditional cabbage wedges with carrots .

1.22.20 We really enjoyed this, and the first thing that came to mind was what a great side dish this would be to grilled white German brats. Next time, I’ll cut back just a bit on both the amount of bacon and the red pepper flakes, but that’s simply personal taste. Good stuff, thanks for sharing!
