This baked bean recipe is easy to make and delicious.

Ingredients

  1. 1 pound bacon
  2. 2 (28 ounce) cans baked beans
  3. 1 (12 ounce) bottle chili sauce
  4. 1 large sweet onion, chopped
  5. 2 cups packed brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble and set aside.
  3. In a large bowl combine beans, chili sauce, onion, brown sugar and bacon. Pour into a 9×13 inch casserole dish.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

These are a family favorite, everyone asks for my baked beans! I do not bake them in the oven, too hot for summer events. I make them on the stovetop, I use bacon bits in a bag, and dried onion, easy, easy, EASY!! I also cut back on the brown sugar somewhat, usually a heaping 1cup for a full batch. These are the best beans ever!!

I have been making this recipe for a few years. It is ALWAYS a big hit. When we are invited to a BBQ, I am asked to bring these beans, and people rave. I usually have no leftovers. I do not change a thing and make it as written.

Great recipe. The brown sugar quantity should vary depending upon which baked beans you purchase. I got Bush’s Country Style and used only 3/4 cup of brown sugar instead of 2 cups. It could have been even a tad less sweet. I drained the beans as others recommended and the consistency was perfect with just enough liquid. I also added a few squirts of yellow mustard. I would add a 5th star if the brown sugar was spot on. I cooked the bacon, then red onion in the pan after draining most of the bacon grease, and added it to the other ingredients in a crockpot. I cooked on high for a few hours. Perfect.

I doubled the recipe for about 20 people. It was more than enough. I followed other suggestions and cooked the onions in the bacon grease as well as reduced the brown sugar to 1 cup for each batch. Everyone loved it!! This was an easy, tasty recipe and great for a crowd.

I suppose I really did not use this recipe as strictly stated as I cooked 1# of great Northern beans in the pressure cooker with 2 teaspoons salt and proceeded from there. As others stated I reduced the brown sugar to 3/4 cup and sautéed the onions in bacon grease that was rendered in my cast iron skillet.

Really enjoyed this one, I also cooked the onion in the bacon dripping before adding to a crock pot with the other ingredients, slow cooked for 7 hrs on low.

I’ve made this recipe several times and it’s amazing! I haveI tried many different recipes for many years and never really found one that I like. This recipe is so good I make it every couple weeks. I love the chili sauce. I use bushes baked beans & Kroger brand chili sauce, excellent!

Way too sweet for my taste. However, I served it to my volunteers and it went over very well. I called it HOBo beans since I used a combination of dried beans (red, navy and black eyed peas soaked over night ) to which I added 1 can of tomato paste then followed the recipe. Of course I cooked this alot longer than suggested since I was using dried beans.

I made the recipe with some changes = 1/2 onion, 1 cup splenda brown sugar, 1/2 lb bacon w/2 strips uncooked prior to baking. I baked 1 hour and 15 min. Another 15 minutes bake time would have been ok also. It turned out really well and everyone liked it.

I was ready to not like this recipe but it was delicious and got rave reviews. I followed others’ recommendations and only used half of the brown sugar and it was perfect. Next time I will use Busch’s Baked beans. This time I used Van Camps and it was a little runny but it was still wonderful. A winner!
