To get my young kids to eat sweet potatoes, I made these candied sweet potatoes with maple syrup. None of us loved dishes that called for marshmallows, pineapples, etc., and they didn’t like them simply prepared. The mildly sweet version was ideal. Even though the children are now all adults, they still want this for Thanksgiving.

Ingredients
- 2 ½ pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
- butter-flavored cooking spray
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon ground allspice
- ¼ cup pure maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons salted butter, melted
Instructions
- Bring a pot of water to a boil; add sweet potatoes. Continue to boil until potatoes are easily pierced with a knife, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spray an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray.
- Mix cinnamon, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and allspice together in a small bowl. Mix maple syrup and melted butter together in another small bowl.
- Drain potatoes and transfer to a bowl. Mash thoroughly. Add spice mix and stir until well blended. Transfer potatoes to the prepared baking pan. Drizzle maple syrup mixture over top.
- Bake in the preheated oven until heated through, 5 to 10 minutes.
- As a shortcut, you can substitute frozen, cooked sweet potatoes for uncooked. You may also leave the sweet potatoes cubed, toss them with the spice mixture, then drizzle with the butter and maple syrup. We’ve done it both ways, but our family prefers them mashed.

My nephew said he loved how this recipe is sweet and savory! I took it to our Thanksgiving and everyone raved about it! I used probably close to 4 lbs. of sweet potatoes and I did reduce the cinnamon and pepper by one half and increased the butter and maple syrup by one half. I sliced the cooked sweet potatoes 1/2″ thick and arranged them in a 2-quart casserole dish. I then mixed the spices with the butter and syrup and spooned it over, covering each slice; we baked it about 30 minutes. I will definitely make this again next Thanksgiving. BUT this recipe is NOT just for holidays and is an attractive dish!
I made these for a Thanksgiving get together last year because a friend of mine doesn’t eat refined sugars. They were an absolute HIT! Everyone loved them and my friend wanted the recipe. I will definitely be making these again this year.
Somehow I missed the step where I was supposed to mash the potatoes! I sliced them and baked them with the syrup-butter mixture and they were delicious. After tasting them I decided not to mash them since the slices were so good. Thanks for the recipe!
