Aunt Ro’s Baked Beans

  4.8 – 87 reviews  • Baked Bean Recipes

This is the baked beans recipe that my aunt Ro uses. It is wonderful for a gathering or barbecue and tastes more like chili than baked beans.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 4 hrs 10 mins
Total Time: 4 hrs 25 mins
Servings: 6
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  1. 8 ounces bacon
  2. 1 pound ground beef
  3. ½ cup chopped onion
  4. 2 (12 ounce) cans pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  5. 2 (15.5 ounce) cans canned butter beans, drained and rinsed
  6. 2 (15 ounce) cans canned baked beans with pork
  7. 1 cup barbeque sauce
  8. 1 cup ketchup
  9. 1 cup brown sugar, packed

Instructions

  1. Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet and cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown. Drain on paper towels, crumble, and set aside. Drain bacon fat from the skillet.
  2. Using the same skillet, cook the ground beef and onion over medium heat, stirring until the meat is no longer pink, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain.
  3. Transfer the ground beef to a slow cooker. Add the pinto beans, butter beans, baked beans with pork, barbeque sauce, ketchup, and brown sugar to the ground beef mixture; stir to blend well. Cover and cook for 4 hours on High. Top each serving with crumbled bacon.

This has been my go to recipe for years and it is always requested. Delicious and hearty, it can be a meal in itself.

I made these exactly according to recipe a couple of months agoand they delicious. This dish is a meal in it’s self with a tossed salad and maybe a roll or bagel. It makes a ton so i put some in the freezer. I took some out and served last night and they held up beautifully!

I changed very little to this recipe. It was like eating a desert, that sweet and tasty. Definately will make many times more. I did add a 15.5 oz.. can of beans with some spicey chilis, so it gave it a tang. A good tang.

Took this recipe to a cookout and everyone could not get enough!!

I’ve made this 4 times, only change I made was instead of bbq sauce I substituted salsa! It’s always the first thing to go!!!

No changes and YES I will make it again. I was pleasantly surprised that they were to be cooked in a slow-cooker. Too hot to run the oven right now

I made this, but substituted chick peas for Lima beans. I only added half of the brown sugar, but it was still extremely sweet. Next time I make this (I’ll definitely make it again) I will omit the sugar and let the Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce take care if that part. Everyone at my party LOVED this dish.

Super flavor. Husband and party attendants all loved them!

The only change I made was to add a pound of venison in addition to the ground beef. I wanted more meat to make it more of a main dish. It worked out well, and my husband liked it. I’m sure I will make it again.

Very easy to make. My family love it. It was a little too sweet for my taste

Ever time I make these beans I receive many compliments and recipe requests. Sometimes I substitute the pinto beans for whatever I have on hand – often black beans. Thanks for the recipe!.

They were great! The family loved the beans.

This was an absolutely superior dish. I brought it to a family potluck and it brought the house down. Everyone loved it. I made it exactly as was written. I didn’t change a thing. Delicious! Thank you so much for making me look good!

This is AMAZING. We make it for every potluck. It makes a lot but it definitely gets eaten. My kids like it to

Made as directed several times. Always a big hit at gatherings. Not your mainstream beans. Delish.
Tracy Peterson
This was delicious, I made it exactly as recipe showed. My family loved it and asked for the recipe. I will be making it again this weekend!

I cut back on sauce mixture to 2/3 c. Made it for a side for pork chops. Everyone loved it! Had 1/2 leftover to taste myself. It’s a keeper!

Made these several times exactly as directed and always end up with an empty dish. These beans (almost a chili) are the best!!!
Phyllis Pope MD
Absolutely splendid. We’ve added other beans, such as garbanzo beans, black beans — always a hit. Have learned to cut the brown sugar way back, by at least a half.
