4-Bean Baked Beans

  4.5 – 47 reviews  • Baked Bean Recipes

Using molasses, four different varieties of beans were baked. I have used several beans in their place and have loved every outcome. Beans of any kind may be used! In addition, I have substituted Canadian bacon for ordinary bacon.

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 1 hr 45 mins
Total Time: 2 hrs
Servings: 16
Yield: 16 servings

Ingredients

  1. 1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
  2. 1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, drained
  3. 1 (15 ounce) can lima beans, drained
  4. 1 (16 ounce) can pork and beans, drained
  5. ½ pound bacon, cut into small pieces
  6. 1 large onion, chopped
  7. 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  8. ¾ cup brown sugar
  9. ½ cup ketchup
  10. ½ cup vinegar
  11. ¼ cup molasses
  12. 1 teaspoon dry mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Place kidney beans, butter beans, lima beans, and pork and beans in a 2-quart casserole dish.
  3. Heat a saucepan over medium heat; cook and stir bacon, onion, and garlic until bacon is browned, about 10 minutes. Pour off excess fat.
  4. Whisk brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, molasses, and mustard into bacon mixture; simmer until cooked through, about 20 minutes. Pour sauce over beans in the casserole dish.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven until bubbling, 1 hour 15 minutes.

These were absolutely delicious. They’ve been requested for our 4th of July get together! A word to Leona. You gave five stars to your recipe, not the woman who originally posted this. You and others that do the same are doing a great disservice to the people who proudly post these recipes.

Took this to Bible study. All raved how good it wass!

I made this as written. The beans were very good. They had a little sweet and a little tang. I eat them hot or cold–just as good either way.

Really liked the taste! I will definitely make these again. My only negative was that they were rather dry by the end of the cooking. Maybe I’ll add some more ketchup? or maybe just some water? or maybe cook it less time, like 50 or 60 minutes? or all of the above? I will definitely be trying something because the flavor is definitely there!

I’ve made this bean recipe many times. The only change I’ve made is swapping out the lima beans for black beans. It’s always a winner. Highly recommend it.

I was wondering why can’t anyone make baked beans without preservative ladened canned beans?? is there a recipe like this someplace that does not use canned beans?? I haven’t made this recipe just asking about a recipe without preservatives

A hit at a picnic every time!

This was great. I made it for a neighborhood gathering, and two people asked for the recipe. I did not use the lima beans, though; I used pinto beans instead, and I would recommend that change (or any other kind of bean besides limas).

I’ve been making a similar recipe for years, a Five Bean Bake. Mine has a can of cut green beans and a can of cut wax beans instead of the Lima beans. It’s a favorite. Switch out whatever beans your family loves for one they don’t. Healthy and delicious.

Didn’t have four bean mix but used multi bean mix I had and it was very good. Liked the sweet-sour taste it has. I will made again this winter.

I changed kidney beans to pinto beans , used red wine vinegar and blueberry syrup instead of molasses cause that’s what I had. Easy recipe and everybody loved it!

Da bomb!!! I and my guests love it!!! After making the first time have cut back on the sugar and molasses. It was too sweet but perfect with the cut back!!!

I have tried many baked beans and this one tops everyone. My dish was devoured at the party! I let the beans simmer for around 4 hours until I was ready to put it in my bean pot to take to family dinner.

Perfect just as is. This is really delicious and popular with everyone that tries it. The bean lovers can’t get enough and those that think they don’t like beans say, “Well, except for that 4 bean thing you make…” Thanks

I browned everything and simmered the sauce with the bacon the day before. Stirring it into the beans the next day was quick and easy and no frying pan to clean the day I needed the completed dish. It went to a pot luck. Not a bean left! Delicious!

Wow! This is so delicious! One of the best baked beans recipes I have ever tried. The only change I made was to omit the bacon. I am a vegetarian. My meat loving husband loved these beans and never even missed the bacon. This recipe goes into my make again file!

These beans are in the oven! Let me say I did not change recipe! They are delicious room temperature so I can’t imagine when they are opened for 90 minutes! These are my go to for everything beans now! Thank You!

My whole family loves these beans! Depending on what’s in my cupboard, the beans may change, but it’s always good! We always change out the lima beans though. They are definitely not a family favorite.
