My three fishing-loving boys and I both reside in Alaska. This is by far my family and friends’ favorite method to eat fresh salmon, and I have had to come up with some pretty inventive ways to prepare fish. While they are off fishing for the day, I prepare the barbecue sauce and soak an untreated cedar plank in water and whiskey. Then, it is ready to be grilled.

Ingredients
- 2 untreated cedar planks
- ¼ cup pineapple juice
- ⅓ cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons white vinegar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ¾ cup honey
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 6 (6 ounce) skinless, boneless salmon fillets
- 1 pinch salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Soak the cedar planks in warm water for 1 to 2 hours. Add a splash of bourbon to the water if desired.
- Bring the pineapple juice, soy sauce, vinegar, lemon juice, olive oil, and honey to a simmer in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and stir in the sugar, 1 teaspoon black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced to a syrupy consistency, about 15 minutes. Set the sauce aside.
- Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat. Place the planks on the grate. They are ready to cook on when they start to smoke and crackle just a little.
- Season the salmon with a light sprinkling of salt and pepper. Place the fillets onto the smoking cedar planks, close the lid of the grill, and cook for 10 minutes. Spoon a small amount of the sauce over the salmon fillets, and continue cooking until the fish turns opaque in the center, about 5 minutes more. Serve with the remaining sauce.

This sauce is great! Super surprised how well it went with the cedar plank salmon on the grill! Will do this again!
Made it for family on Father’s Day, everyone loved it. My sisters usually don’t ask to take leftovers of fish, but they did on this one and I had none left over for myself!
Good mix of spices — flavor was great! Next time I’ll reduce the soy by half and maybe do more honey and less brown sugar to help it be a thicker glaze.
I cannot say enough good about this recipe! This recipe is my favorite food, it’s my go to for all special occasions. I’ve made this even for people who say they don’t like fish and even they’ve liked this. The only complaint I could possibly give is that it’s too good and that I can’t restrain myself whenever it’s around. I think one time I ate half of a 3 pound filet of it, and I’m a relatively small person, so that was a lot for me lol. Seriously good recipe here.
I made this recipe just as printed for Labor Day weekend BBQ. Family and friends loved it! This recipe is for sure a keeper. Thank you for sharing. I will definitely make again.
Love this recipe!! The only difference is when I doubled up the ingredients for the sauce so I could use it with shrimp as well I used 1/2 soy and 1/2 teriyaki?. It turned out great!!
Note to self: add fresh ginger and garlic. Delete cayenne, use half honey & half habanero honey.
I made this for the.last Friday of Lent. I did make a couple of small changes: I used coconut brown sugar which has a lower glycemic index, seasoned rice vinegar for the white vinegar (I was out of white) and a 1/2 cup honey (very low on honey and didn’t want to make a trip to the store) . I was awesome! I will be using the sauce for other dishes. In fact, some will be used on the Easter ham today! Love the sweet heat!!!
I was missing some of the ingredients such as the lemon juice and pineapple juice, but its still turned out a hit!
Delicious but sauce didn’t thicken up so will add a thickener next time.
straight forward and delicious.
I was delicious! But I messed up on the sauce and it never thickened up. But it was good.
This was the first time I made salmon on the grill and it turned out perfectly! And that sauce…amazing!! This is now my favorite salmon recipe!
Delicious! The sauce pairs well with the cedar smoke.
Love it!!! I followed the recipe as written and even my daughter loved it(shocker). Thanks for the recipe.
We really liked it! I did skip the black pepper on the salmon and glad I did. It was spicy enough without it.
Outstanding! This is super delicious and quite simple. This is now at the top of my list for salmon preparation. Thank you.
The variety of ingredients had me questioning this at first, but it has the most amazing, unique flavor. This is our favorite salmon recipe and I get compliments every time I make it!
I liked it a lot. I wanted to lick the bowl with the sauce, it’s so tasty. But, I cut down the amount of pepper in this recipe, and used Coconut Aminos as a low salt Soy sauce substitute. I didn’t have straight pineapple juice so I opened a can of pineapple chunks in 100% juice and used that. Some of the pineapples got into it, and they were tasty too! Like another reviewer, I added more pineapple juice mixed with thickener, because it took way longer than 15 minutes to thicken (like 45 minutes). I would’ve given this 5 stars with the changes I made, but as written, it’s 4.
This was truly an exceptional recipe. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Followed the recipe exactly as it was written. Thank you.
Love this recipe!!! I always make rice with it and some extra sauce so I can pour it over the rice. I have made this recipe many times and will continue to. I don’t change anything, except increasing the sauce.
