Cedar Plank Salmon

  4.5 – 36 reviews  • Salmon Fillet Recipes

Salmon baked on a cedar board is simple to make with this technique. Even the grill can be used to prepare it. Lemon wedges are used as a garnish.

Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 40 mins
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  1. 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  2. 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  3. 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  4. 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
  5. 3 tablespoons water, or as needed
  6. 1 tablespoon soy sauce (Optional)
  7. 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (Optional)
  8. 4 (6 ounce) salmon fillets, with skin
  9. 1 12-inch untreated cedar plank, soaked in water for 2 hours

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  2. Combine brown sugar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and dill in a small bowl. Mix in water, a little at a time, adding just enough to make the mixture liquid. Stir in soy sauce and pepper.
  3. Place salmon fillets, skin-side down, onto the soaked cedar plank. Spoon sugar mixture evenly over fillets to fully coat.
  4. Place cedar plank directly on a rack in the preheated oven; bake until fish flakes easily with a fork, 30 to 40 minutes.
  5. The cedar plank should be soaked in water for at least 2 hours, but it can be soaked for up to 12 hours.
  6. Preheat an outdoor grill to medium heat. Follow Steps 2 and 3 above. Place plank and salmon on the preheated grill. Cover and cook until fish flakes easily with a fork, about 25 minutes.

Very good recipe! Surprisingly great taste using everyday pantry items. I will definitely make this again.

My husband said it was the best salmon I had ever made. I grilled it but next time I think I’ll try it in the oven. I didn’t realize it could be done in the oven. Great recipe!

Amazing came out a little salty tasting maybe would be ideal with a low sodium soy sauce if you are are on a low salt diet or just don’t like salt.

Good, but Ichanged the recipe pretty significantly cause my mom doesn’t like brown sugar, so you shouldn’t judge the recipe based on my review. I added some paprika and harissa and cut back the brown sugar to a third.

Definitely a 10 star recipe. I didn’t add water since I used the optional soy sauce. I baked the salmon in my toaster oven lined with parchment paper to catch the delicious marinade. I baked for 35 minutes until my salmon reached 140 degrees. After resting 5 minutes, it was ready to eat…yum!

I will make it again if I buy a salmon with a cedar plank. It was so good!!!! I made it for my mom on Mother’s day and it turned out perfect!

One of my favorite ways to make salmon!

Very mild, sweet flavors and easy to make. I followed the recipe, with soy sauce as the only optional ingredient. The sesame seeds add a nice crunch.

This was nice. I substituted 2 tbs coconut water instead of water water. I think I will cut some of the soy next time to decrease the sodium. I prepped the salmon with blackened redfish magic for some kick. Tried to talk the wife into serving with boiled sweet potato honey fries and grilled scallions, but she only allows me to improvise on one menu item per meal, and the salmon won out.

No did not taste well

I did not like the flavor of this dish. It was sweet and also bland. I would not make this again.

This was excellent. Fast, flavorful, and very moist! I have only used cedar planks on the grill, so using it the oven was new to me but a great one to try. With the heat lowered, really helped to retain the moisture – I was out of brown sugar and used Turbinado as a fast substitute and it worked – but will use brown sugar next time for the benefit of carmelizing. Thank you so much! – sarahcf

Not a huge fish fan but this recipe did the trick. Followed it pretty closely, triple recipe because I had a big piece of salmon, and thought there would be plenty of leftovers. Not so, ate it all up.

Great! I used fresh dill and then added a Dill Sauce that I got off this website.

I don’t eat fish – but my husband loves it – so I’m always looking for good recipes to suprise him with. This one is now his favorite! We’ve made it several times since I stumbled across it and he loves it!!

This was an absolute hit! I made it for my boyfriends family out at the cabin. We all loved it! I changed a couple of things. I made the brine and marinated in a large tupperware container for 2 days before grilling and I also added 3 gloves of fresh garlic minced – I’m a garlic lover :)We always soak the cedar plank for at least 8 hours before using on the BBQ

I used fresh dill and wild caught salmon. I’m not sure a farm raised salmon has the strength of flavor to stand up to the flavors in the sauce. Also, I think make sure to plank it–I think the cedar adds to the flavor balance. Next time, I might reduce the sugar–salmon as a fish doesn’t generally need it. This is my go-to recipe for planking, and I think suits NW caught wild steelhead salmon very well.

I love cedar plank salmon. Didn’t have a plank so…I baked this in foil packets in the oven. In my opinion, a good quality salmon should not be dressed up with such strong flavors. It was good a good flavor combination but somewhat overpowering.
